    Frontrange: Best Gyros

Growing up in south florida near a very large greek population, Ive always loved a good gyros. Im talking about the true verticle rotisserie setup and not those fake "slices" of rectangular meat.

Best place Ive found so far that actually does it up for real, is a little place in littleton called symposium. I havent really gone searching for greek food and gyros in particular around Denver, but what have you people found?

heres to get everyone in the mood

    88lbs of gyros

Pita Jungle on University Between Evans and Jewel.

Jerusalem on Evans a block north of University.

Both of those are Middle Eastern food, but close enough to Greek and do have Gyro on the spit.

Check out the Greektown section of Colfax after dark for Gyro + bonus hookers.

Ditto on Pete's. I usually hit the one on Pearl and Alameda. The Candlelight (dive bar) is just down the street for post-dinner drinks and serve Dale's Pale Ale by the can.

well the one above is made in greece. over there its predominantly either pork or chicken. That one is a wwhole bunch of thinly slice pork cutlets that have been season and then stacked onto a skewer. I beleive there are layers of fat in there too for some flavor.

The ones in the states are generally a super fine meat paste that are rolled and formed onto a rotisserie skewer. As BSS states, theyre generally lamb+seasonings, but sometimes people cut the lamb with beef as well.

When in skiing in Austria or Germany, look for a "Doner Kabob" sign. Same stuff.

Ummm... prepared differently. Döner are Turkish, Gyros are Greek. Döner will have some weird pickled shit in it sometimes - tastes good, but me likey the true Tsatsiki sauce and lettuce/tomato mo'better.

check out wikipedia's article on gyros for nomenclature
theyre all basically the same thing, but what people call them and how theyre prepared seems to vary more with where you are than what theyre called.

Jerusalem near DU has awesome Middle Eastern food. I have never seen a Greek style gyro in the states. It is very rare to see the stacked pork cutlets and even then it's not nearly as salty or has fries on top like you get in Greece.

side note: I've read the Gyro actually originated in the U.S. by a Greek immigrant.

Pete's Gyro place on Colfax and Fillmore (near East high). There is also Pete's Kitchen and Pete's greektown cafe. I think Pete's Gyros is the best followed by Pete's Greektown; then Pete's Kitchen.

Man! Is that place still there? That's where I ate the one (mentioned above) 30 years ago when I was in HS (at East) there.

Maybe it's a different place - I can't remember the name but it was right close to there.

Not only is it still there but my girlfriend's dad eats breakfast there nearly everyday. It is kind of a dive, but the gyros are awesome. When I am in town I eat there once a week.

My girlfriend went to East, too.

    East Angels, what?!
