Skier killed at Mt. Hood Meadows
A 45-year old skier was struck and killed -- apparently by a hit-and-run skier or snowboarder -- at Mt. Hood Meadows Friday morning.
Dave Riley, general manager for the resort, said the dead man was discovered by another skier at about 9:45 a.m. on the North Canyon run, considered one of the easier runs on the mountain. The passing skier called Hood River County 9-1-1, which in turn called the Mt. Hood Meadows ski patrol office.
Riley said the man was declared dead by a member of the state medical examiner's office, who happened to be skiing.
"Anytime something like this happens, it's a tragedy," Riley said. "Our hearts go out the man's family."
Riley said the Hood River County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the incident, which shut the ski run for about three hours.
The dead man's name will not be released until his family is notified.
Riley said two people died in skiing accidents during the 2005 season. None died last year.
"We checked our records and this is the first hit and run death we've ever heard of,'' he said.
