    Collision death, MT Hood.

Sad to hear. Sorry ass to leave the scene of the collision:

GOVERNMENT CAMP -- A skier was killed Friday after a collision on a run at Mt. Hood Meadows.

    KGW

    Mount Hood.

Dave Riley of Mt. Hood Meadows said a 45-year-old Portland man died after an apparent collision around 9:45 a.m.

Officials said it appeared he was skiing on the North Canyon run when someone else crashed into him. Officials said it was unknown if the other person was skiing or snowboarding. That person left the scene.

The area where the death happened was closed for investigation and deputies were trying to interview people in the area for more information.

The name of the victim was not released.

That is horrible, hopefully they'll step forward or Karma will bite them hard...

Anyone remember in the winter of '03-'04 when that guy hit a huge ice boulder created by the snowcat right under the Mt. Hood Express? They didn't even crush the boulder all the way down after the man died on it! People were on the lift watching him die.

Keep an eye out up there.

What a freakin' loser.... Hit and run....

Another reason why I hate skiing at meadows.... rude people who have no regard for others on the mountain.

I hope they throw the book at him Dan-O.

Should the person be punished for skiing too fast? Or for abandoning the scene of the accident? I say yes on the latter, but the former may have been just an accident. I don't want to see a precedent of liability actions for stuff like this....UNLESS, persons involved flee the scene. I guess for this guy the need to be a stand-up person was eclipsed by his fear of the consequences.

Good thing the medical examiner was there to handle the situation. Shooosh.... "sure enough, he's dead." Shoosh... .

So far there are not enough facts out (that I have seen) to form any opinion on whether the hit and run person was skiing (boarding) to fast or not. I too would not like to see regulations and enforcement of speed in area, other than posted and marked "slow skiing" and "family skiing" areas. That being said one should never be skiing in area at a speed where one can not stop or change course to avoid hitting another person. Leaving the scene of a collision is a crime. Period. There has been a dramatic increase in these type of incidents and it is total bullshit! There is no more room for this behavior in ski areas than there is on the roads.

    This is awful news.

    N. Canyon is a frickin' boulevard- wide open. It's certainly easy to build up speed there, but it's not at all steep and you'd have to be an extreme idiot to hit someone there.

There are other runs at Meadows where boarders shoot out of the trees onto groomed runs and come close to nailing people, but I can't think of anywhere on North canyon where this could have happened.

I've had a skier literally drop an air into me as i was riding down the upper cattrack at targhee...don't blame the device, blame the rider. And let's not discuss getting poled by gapers...

There is one spot about half way down that narrows substantially - management in their infinite wisdom decided to build a bunch of jumps there and roped off about half the width. Don't know if it happened there or not.

Bio-Smear, I disagree with your contention - you cannot be under any semblance of control and "accidentally" kill someone in a ski collision.

Regardless, it's still a tragedy. +++vibes to the family, and bad karma to the douchebag that hit and ran.

some guy from another site says he was first on the scene and the person (a boarder according to him) who hit the skier was still there at the time and took off when he yelled for someone to get ski patrol.

he also said there were 7 collisions requiring ski patrol assistance today.

This happened right in front of me once when I was looking up hill at my then 5 year old son - the person the jackass boarder almost pummeled. I've never been so close to dismantling someone, and what kept fueling me was that he couldn't understand what I was so upset about.

Find them and make 'em someone's cell bitch.

I don't think it's so much an issue of being in control as it is of prudence. Some of safest drivers/skiers/motocrossers/pedestrians whatever have made the mistake of diverting from their line unexpectedly and stepped in front of someone who may be in control, but simply cannot divert and avoid quickly enough. How many times have you had a beginner suddenly cut hard in front of you? Probably a lot. Tough to speculate, so I'll stop.

which is why i stay the hell away from everybody.

Skier Geoffrey Scott Bradeen, 45, of Portland was struck and killed -- apparently by a hit-and-run snowboarder -- at Mt. Hood Meadows this morning.

According to Hood River County Sheriffs Det. Bob Davidson, the investigating deputy, it appears that Bradeen may have fallen and was hit by a snowboarder while attempting to get up. the assistant medical examiner determined Bradeen died of head injuries.

My thoughts go out to his friends and family. Hopefully he died on impact and not as a result of the assailant not getting help... or having to suffer. Very sad news. Hopefully they catch the person who hit him... or even better if the story is wrong and he had gone to get help.

    Bio,
In general, I see what you are saying, but yes, I (and likely all of us) have often had a beginner suddenly cut in front of me, but how often have I actually hit them... and with enough force to kill them? thankfully never and that seems to be the difference. Keep in mind that this was on a green run. Seems to me that the other person was likely reckless... even if they had not taken off after the accident.

It is real tough to speculate exactly what happened, especially if the other person does not come forward, but what is known is that there was an accident and someone has died and my thoughts are with their friends and family. Be careful out there everyone.

Same thing nearly happened to me yesterday @ practice...We were running a real fast and open GS course, and I was bombing through the tuck section when out of nowhere a snowboarder cuts THROUGH the course, nearly smacking into me.

I was going too fast and was too focused on the course to really figure out what had happened, but my coach who was standing @ the bottom and my teammates on the lift said I couldn't have been more than 3-5 feet away from this guy.

Some people are really fucking stupid.

If the snowboarder hit him in the head he needent have been going that fast to cause enough head trauma or a laceration that could have killed someone.

This is why people ought to wear helmets.

Unknown as to whether a helmet would have saved his life (I agree people should wear helmets). If the subject had fallen and was hit while he was down there is no excuse (there is really none anyway as far as leaving the incident scene). There is no way to justify running into a skier/boarder who has fallen.
