Sorry to keep the minions waiting...I went to sleep last night.
If no one else wants to try, it's a mispronounciation/mistransliteration of the Scandinavian name Reul (spelling?), the guy who originated the turn (on 7 foot wooden skis). Americans took it without knowing it was a guy's name, and pronounced it 'royal'.

There were Look XMs that were red and blue.

Sorry Dexter, the Look Nevada/N17 is age appropriate for the Strato and predates the XM by quite a few years.

I don't know if I'm buying that one Dexter. It's pretty hard to imagine fine Americans butchering a foreign language in the way you're suggesting.

THe VR 70 was a GS ski made by Dynamic that had a cracked metal sidewall.

It was not a light ski.

Now, what color was the Dynastar S530?

Ted, you might be right about the Olin. But, it would have been the Olin Mark IV, which was released prior to the Comp.

The Mark IV had a groove and I'm pretty sure the Comp didn't ( and also had turned up tail. Or did they have3 a ballet ski too.

Did we overlook your question or was this an attempted answer in the form of a question?

K2 made an Electra (GS), but so did Volkl. Volkl's ski was the Explosiv R Electra; the first production ski with a sintered 4000 electra (black) base.

Grooves? Good question. But both Mark IV models and the Mark III had turned-up tails. And no, the Mark III was not a ballet ski.

    Olin questions:
What color(s) was the Mark III?
What color was the Mark II V.C.E.?
    What does V.C.E. stand for?
Was the Mark II V.C.E. a slalom, giant slalon or aerials ski?

Mark III colors--crummy orange with blue lettering? Or am I back on the Mark IV?

And easier question: original colors of the Kastle RX12, and its later colors.

You are thinking of the MKIV's Dexter; the Mark III's were dark blue with mustard(?) yellow lettering.

The Kastle RX12's were mostly white with, as I recall, red and blue lettering and very little or no graphics to speak of.

I was trying to answer the question of what K2 was the GS counterpart to the VO.

    OLIN QUESTIONS:

    Mark III-alraedy answered

Mark II Colors- red, w/ white lettering

    V.C.E.- variable cracked edge

Mark II...SL or GS? Don't think it was designated as either, though the Mark VI was a slalom ski, so maybe GS.

I never skied any Olins either. Very popular in their day....almost as popular as the N170 brand.

heh, those N170's rocked. Wasn't there something that was supposed to be unique about the way Olin's were constructed? I seem to recall something like that.

The Olin Mark VI came in 2 versions: The SL (Dark Grn w/yellow letters) and the GS (my first 200cm+ ski) which was Gray with dark red Lettering.

    Get it right, you idiots.

K2 owned the brand name for a while, but it looks like they sold it off.

I never owned a pair of Olin or N170's for that matter, but I did get to replace the pair of my brother's Mark IV's that got stolen.

Of course, he didn't know I had borrowed them.

The only thing I've ever wanted with the Olin name on it was a park bench made out of Mark II V.C.E.'s; Olin sold these benches to their dealer network and I'd love to find one in good condition.

Edit: Olin is making skis again. I can't, however, say that any of us are the better for it.

    Let's switch to Harts . . . .

    Cameo - what color(s)?

    Wedelking - what color(s)?

    Javelin XXL - what color(s)?

    Double bonus points: Hornet
    what color(s)?

Damn, I wanted a pair of Hornets more than anything when I was a kid.

In keeping with the ski history link thread, check out some of the posters and gear on this site.

    edit: who is Two Buddah?

My bad "3" was a typo. I had a pair of IVs and no or not much turned up tail. The COMP IV had a squarish tip , white lettering and I'm thinking no groove and a pronouced truned up tail.
