    Midwest Rant on Weather

The only snow I've seen this year was a small window of flurries and less than an inch of slush that fell and soon melted within 12 hours.

Fuck the weather, I want snow.

Not concerned at all about the warm, hell it hasn't been below freezing for well over a couple of weeks. Dry on the other hand...

Just talked to my Mom today in Green Bay. She said it was downpouring rain. Gonna be a lot of pissed off snowmobilers/ice fishermen/Birkebiners as well as skiers if the weather keeps up. Oh well, the season's still young..

Riding Kettle Morraine is a poor substitute for skiing - even if that skiing is icy Tyrol Basin or Devil's Head. Seriously, that place blows.

Good point, I recall that one of the days is supposed to get up to near 50! Might start to actually dry out the soil.

And the softshell... friggen shweeeet! Kept all this half ass weather out.

seriously, and there's no snow out there - only a little weak storm a week from now (next Saturday) - for my first winter in Chicago in 11 years, it's been a fairly easy change. Aside from that frigid first week of December, of course...

By the way, my wife asked a few nights ago "when we were going to meet up with all the maggots" out here....anyone up for a gathering once the New Year settles down?

Yes. I get back from Colorado the 9th and could give two craps about school this semester. I am down for beers, dinner, drinks, any or all of the above.

Cmon 50 degree weather. Mountain biking in the midwest is a worthy substitute for not being able to ski out west!

I've skied every week since the beginning of December and Chestnut is still open today, not sure how with the torrential 47 degree rain that hit overnight - Sundown over on this side of the Mississippi did have to shut down today temporarily, but I don't ski there. Chestnut did close some runs according to their website, including the top of warpath . I haven't missed a Wednesday yet, and have been up for a couple weekends. This last Wed. held the best conditions all year, just before the latest installment of warm rain.

We will see what kind of operations they have for tomorrow, they plan to stay open with all the in house guests. They'll there 70 polecats fired back up after monday night with cold temps predicted. Should be back on with good skiing for this Wednesday AM.

Tomorrow, in an attempt to bring back the cold weather, we are planning a full on waterski outing here in Cedar Rapids with the (water) ski team, where for the first time in years the river is flowing freely for New Years day. 12 noon, Ellis Park, be there, I'll have the Mastercraft launched. Free pull for any maggot that shows (as if). Bring drysuits.

Xboat and myself are game for a maggot get together at the nut. Its the closest good skiing to Chicago, and they have the snowmaking to keep things open through a warm el nino midwestern winter like we have been having.

Next weekend? I can be there unless my girlfriend makes me come to Chicago

And, the AK Rockets absolutely kill in the slush. Its funny getting on the lifts with all the tiny little skis people have on and listening to the slush complaints. If only they knew...

After solid rainy weather from Green Bay to Eau Claire since Thursday, Eau Claire finally got some snow out of it. About 1 inch at most. Today it's sunny and warm so the snow will most likely be gone by tomorrow.

We got just enough snow in an NYE storm to cover the dirt white... Now it's sunny, white and pretty Happy New Year all!
We're sorta like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open.

Game on man; next week is supposed to be above 40 nearly the whole time with minimal precipitation.

If everything stays the way it is I'll definitely be biking. Y'all are welcome to tag along.

Having grown up there, let me say that is completely retarded.

    Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
    Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason

Today with a north wind, blue sky and still absolutely zero snowfall for the winter, we threw up arms and hit the Cedar. Water temps were an unthinkable 40 degrees on a river that is normally frozen completely solid. Its been open one other time on new years day in the last twenty years. Air temp 30 degrees.

A crowd gathers hoping to catch a glimpse of someone becoming hypothermic.

Warm winter, cold winter. Adapt and enjoy. We discuss airfare to the pacific nw as our next adaptation.

I take a walk on the beach in search of a Corona.

And then a little walk on the water.

Some social skiers soaking in the sun.

This guy tried to send a barefoot bombout, but missed. He beatered right in front of the cheering crowd. No drysuit. Brrr... forty degrees is still pretty chillin'. More balls than I have.

Mark lines up for a back deep beach start behind the etec.

    And he sends it

Models today are hinting at a big overall change in the pattern for the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley in the middle of the month, with an area of cold air sliding out of Canada and some good moisture moving in on the northern branch of the jet - that would bring a return of winter to the area...starting about 1/13/07...

I agree. If we all cannot meet up to ski, might as well meet up to bike!

I knew it!! MrNohills is going to be spending most of January in Texas, leaving me to deal with any snow we get. And I'm sure it will be alot because of his absence.

Things age getting pretty thin at Chestnut. I rolled in last night for a couple of hours on my way to the windy. It was funny watching the weekenders roll up and walk over to the muddy, barren hill. The bunny hill is a small stripe in front of the lodge, and was packed with more skiers than it could handle, pretty funny.

The large bunny area in the middle of this triangle is demolished. Two weeks with 50 degree temps and only one night of snowmaking. The guns should go back on tonight.

Warpath, the only run that I usually ski, is hammered and closed Should be back open for next Wed. according to Red Barons forecast.

Coverage on down the hill was really still pretty good. I can't get over how much I like the AK Rockets on this sort of thing. They really can make miserable heavy deep slush with pockets of hard granular fun to ski. Everybody else is on skinny skis though. Poor chaps.

And as usual, an amazing Mississippi sunset with Iowa in the background. Sorry for pic quality, they are from my razr. I keep smokin' my digitals.

Working on my climbing jonghood with a little indoor climbing today here in Chicago, and then planning a few more laps at the nut for tonight or Sunday am.

Bring on the cold. Trigger pulled on some of that cheap airfare to the PNW.
