dont know why you should have to pay excess at all...its only 20kg, most transatlantic flights have 32kg limit or 28kg...just call your airlines..

because i also have my normal luggage of 25 kg...
(including my boots)

and flying economy from aust is 20 kg limit with most airlines

Go for the nicest sweetest airline check-in person, be super cheery and happy and nice, and hope for the best. Also, don't forget to be creative: Skoog and I ended up wearing a bunch of our stuff (extra clothes, boots, camera gear) on the plane once when we were told our bags were too big and heavy. They didn't like it and we were hot as hell, but once we were away from the security it went all right back in the bag.
There's also the stick-yer-foot-under-the-scale if it's that type of scale. That's worked for me in the past as well. "Gee, this giant coffin of a ski bag only weighs 22 pounds!"

All that being said, the most obivous thing is to ditch the all-mtn skis. Isn't that what park skis and fat skis are anyways?

okay... so i get to checkin and they want $863 aud for my excess!!!

i ended up charming the pants off this old lady and getting away with paying nothing, and scoring a BUSINESS CLASS upgrade with a free star alliance membership that now has 24,000 frequent flyer miles on it!

i also claimed back the gst on $3,000 of my skis and found a tiny hole in my ski bag, so i'm getting that refunded as well!
