Boxer Mike Tyson is free this morning but undergoing drug and alcohol monitoring after telling police he has a cocaine problem "and uses it anytime he can get his hands on it."
Tyson, 40, was pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence 1:45 a.m. Friday in downtown Scottsdale by a Buckeye police officer working as part of a DUI holiday task force.
Maricopa County Superior Court commissioner Sheila Madden did not set bond at a 9 a.m. hearing but did require supervision of Tyson while he awaits a preliminary hearing Jan. 16.
She prohibited from drinking or taking any nonprescription drugs and said he must continue to reside in his Paradise Valley home and cannot leave the state.
The police report said Tyson's black BMW 745i was seen weaving along Scottsdale Road and Earll Drive and he failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over.
The officer said he observed a white powder substance on the center console and Tyson was wiping off the dashboard as he approached.
Police took Tyson to a DUI processing area at Chaparral and Scottsdale roads. They found no alcohol in his system but said they determined he "was under influence of depressants, stimulants and cannabis."
The officer's reports said, "He admitted to using today and stated he is an addict and has a problem. Mike admitted to possessing bags of cocaine and said he uses it anytime he can get his hands on it."
He was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix and represented himself at his initial court appearance at 9 a.m.
Tyson, who shot to fame by knocking out Trevor Berbick in 1986 to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at age 20, has had several run-ins with the law over the years, including serving prison time for rape. The most infamous incident was in the ring in 1997 when he bit Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.
