    Was in Bolivia in June.

Probably won't be back down to SA until June/July at the earliest... but if you're offering crash space in Bolivia and will still be around then, yea.

We are headed to Peru and possibly Bolivia in a couple months and have heard rumors that Bolivia may not be the safest place for US tourons. What's the scoop from those in the know, just curious.

I didn't feel any less safe there than anywhere else in south america, really. Like PC said, if you pay attention, you probably won't have any problems.

Plus, Bolivia is pretty dang cheap.

Probably didn't make the news in the U.S. but Peru just had 5 police officers and 3 civilians ambushed and slaughtered by Sendero Luminoso guerillas. The national police caught them and now the president (Alan Garcia) is calling for the death penalty.

I'm not super happy to hear about this shit in Ayacucho since I have to go there at least once a month, but it sounds mostly drug related - not political. I have never felt any danger during daylight hours in South America. Wandering through bad neighborhoods at night is a different story, but I wouldn't advocate going for a stroll in the S. Bronx, Watts, etc. at midnight either...

Powderchick: I plan to be in Peru for at least the next 6 months. Send me a PM and let me know when you might be in Peru. Right now, I'm working on projects in Cusco, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, and Ica, but living in Lima. Would love to get down to Bolivia for some hiking, but not sure if i'll have the time...

BP: are you planning on coming back to SA after graduation? I just met a girl yesterday that has a fullbright to work on debt for conservation swaps in the Peruvian selva. Sounded pretty cool.
