    Bindings: marker vs. salomon

    Hye guys (and ladies):

I need some bindings for my mantras, and I've been extended a pretty decent deal on two different bindings (i think) by a place clearing out their stock. The two bindings in question are: marker M1100 and Salomon 710

anyone have any thoughts? I'm sure I'll have to bend the brakes out to fit the wide ski, but other than that can someone shed some light on these guys for me? Thanks!

I hesitate to speak for the collective, but I have been around long enough to say that most people on here absolutely love Markers. If you try the search function, you will note a plethora of posts discussing why any other manufacturer even bothers making bindings.

    Seriously, try the search function.

Yeah in the search function I noticed an affection for markers. I was specifically wondering if anyone had experience with these certain models. In my search on the markers I saw that someone as selling a pair, but that's about it... Thanks!

I'd like to think I'm coming up on advanced. I live up in vail and get around 40-50 days a year or so. I enjoy everything the mountian has to offer (except not much of a moguls guy)

Lets just say, the Marker 1100 was the alpine standard that Lou Dawson used to test against various AT bindings for flex....

    And the AT bindings won.

The question is, are the skis you are puting these on worth an upgrade to at least a 12 din binding? These are both bottom feeders for quality, hence you will get what you paid for. A Mantra is not a small ski and you really ought to put something on there with some guts. That said, either binding is "functional".

I would have to say that MARKERS are about the safest bindings you can buy

Both those bindings suck. Are you really gonna put $75 bindings on $700 skis?

    You should get:
    Salomon Z12, S914, S912ti
    Look/Rossi: P12, P15, PX12, PX14, Axial 120, Axial 140, Axial2 120, Axial2 140
    Tyrolia: LD12, Mojo 15.

    Sack up.

Get a 14 DIN binding and smack it on that sh@#. Look, Rossi or Solomon, Marker if you must. Just make sure you get something that goes up to 14, or you will outgrow the bindings. An 11 DIN binder will not hold you in on your first 15ft accidental drop...

i work in a shop and despite selling lots of markers i wouldnt buy them, they last 1-2 seasons before they start failing torque tests, find some used s914s and be happy, or pick up a new set of the tyrolia mojo 15 bomber and cheap

A guy who describes his skiing ability in this manner does not need 14DIN race binders. Salomon and Look/Rossignol 12DIN will do just fine and save you a little money.

Markers are sweet. I heard that Shane mcConky and Brad Homesboy were skiing on the 1100 this year. Not.

Seriously, WTF are you thinking? Yeah, lets put a crappy 10 din salomon on a $700 fat ski. Great. That's an awesome way to continue to be a "nearly advanced" skier.

Listen up. Bindings are important. They are much more than a commodity. They allow you to SKI. If your skis are not stiffly and reliably attached to your boots, it makes it much harder to trust your equpment and ski at a higher level.

You probably don't need a 14 din binding...they are heavier, and you probably don't need a din that high. You do need a high quality 12 din binding though that won't let you down. For cheap money, I suggest a lightly used pair of Salomon 997 Driver Carbons (12 din) off ebay. Yes, the ones from the mid 90's. They can be had in great shape for under $50, and are better bindings than pretty much all the newer ones.....S900's, S912, etc. HINT: http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=70842 You'll need to bend the brakes, swap arms as discussed in that thread, or use a S916 compatable brake.

If you want something new for around $150, I suggest the following, in this order:

    Rossignol FKS 120
    Look P12 (NOT PX12)
    Salomon Z12 (maybe.)

The only 12 din bindings that I will personally trust like a Look P18 or salomon S916 (high din race stock bindings), are the Rossi FKS 120 and salomon 957 composite, which says alot about their build quality and performance.

(I'm not recommending the 957 to you because they are 15 years old and not indemnified anymore, but they are still absolutely fantastic bindings.)

    Survey says? BBBBBBBZZZZZZZTTTTTTT!!!!!

JRM, what DIN do you run? 7ish?

14 DIN is beyond overkill for this guy.

The problem with both sets of bindings is not the top DIN or the price. It's that both suck.

A good -- good -- 10 or 11 DIN binding, let alone a 12, will do you fine. Unfortunately, you missed out on Evogear's clearout of the Tyrolia Mojo 11 for $70. And the Salomon 912s on SAC for $80. And, well, every other <$100 deal on decent bindings.

If you're looking to save money, go for a pair of older clamps. Look P10 or P12 turntables (rather than the newer PX series, which lacks the turntables) or their Rossignol counterparts. Salomon 8xx or 9xx. 10+ DIN Tyrolias.

And if you aren't up, I bought a pair I probably don't need. Let me know if you need 'em, newbie.

The more important question is what someone coming up on advanced is doing on Mantra's. Not the stiffest ski in the world, but it's certainly not soft either.

Based on the fact that he lives in Vail and gets 40-50 days, I'm guessing that might be modesty.
