    NX21 heelpiece question

OK... to get the increased ramp angle for the NX21 (over the NX01) do I have to install the NX21 red&black lock/elevator or is it built into the binding elsewhere such that I can leave the yellow/black NX01 piece on. (I don't need the superlock b/c the only time I've ever had NX01 instatele was 3yr ago at the end of an incredible superbeater.)

just curious, but why would you not just swap for the new heel peice?
im assuming its new, so it will have essentially no load cycles (superbeaters) on it and therefore potentially last longer.
is there a weight savings or is it more complex to use and switch from\between ski\climbing modes?
    just curious.

edit: dude, plus its red and black. thats way cooler than black and yellow

weight savings, complex use although both of these can probably be adressed by rtemoving the secure lock portion (easily done) but most of all... it means puling and reinserting screws which i'm more nervous about because it is the heel, has a long arm, and only three screws

but i'm willing to do it if it supplies the ramp angle

    NX21 are the shit

Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

BCA says that the heelpieces are identical except for the lockign mechanism and slightly beefier plastic in teh NX21.

    NX01 heels stay for now

NX21s ROCK ROCK ROCK holy shit these bindings ROCK

    should have been more specific

whats so rockin in comparison to the 01?

stucturally, it seems like its just the beefed up toe links that would make a difference. It also looks like the din adjusters are metal instead of plastic, as well as the reinforced\thicker plastic sections in the heel release\cocking lever. (which would seem to have no effect on skiing).

    just looking for insight.

Even though I bought mine in a "non-group-buy" order from SS (where the group buys are going through) this fall, I had a feeling I had ended up with the 05-06 version, having heard about the "improved" nx21 for 06-07, though I couldn't ever figure out what supposedly had been improved.

Well, that was confirmed Thursday...Summit and I were out doing a tour, and at the end of the day, I noticed his nx21's had different "markings" on the binding...with a little closer inspection, Summit noticed one small difference...that may actually make a more significant (or not?) difference, even between the nx21 model years (and thus, the nx01's). Under the 2nd hinge-point, this year's model has some extra plastic "tubs" attached to the plastic piece that tapes down to the ski topsheet. I'm explaining this really poorly...maybe Summit can take a pic and post it. Anyway, conceivably, without these stubs under that pivot point, with enough force/pressure right under the toe there, you could seeminginly flex the pivot point downward while skiing. I would think the movement would be somewhat limited, since the binding rails are locked down, so they can't move up much to allow that flexion...(maybe this could be tested in some way?)...so these stubs seemingly would prevent/minimize that flexion potential. I'm still not convinced how probable it is for that flexion to occur...but it seems like a good thing, with minimal weight gain.

I just looked at mine again...I didn't do this with Summit's, so not sure how his are with those stubs...but when in touring mode, a big part of the function of the VRS is that second pivot point flexing downward, as the first step of the motion. I wonder if those stubs prevent the downward flex, even while in tour mode... In that case, there would be at least some loss of function of the VRS system...

I happend to have a 05/06 and an 06/07 pair of nx21's mounted on two pairs of BRO's in front of me. (My brother and I tend to choose very similar gear ).

We ended up with two different year models because we received a L and a M initially, waited a long time to return the L and received this year's model.

The nubbins are there but with much pressure they collapse. The 05/06 has a pivot wedge that the 06/07's do not. The wedge is located slightly behind where the new nubbins are. I think both are designed to keep the bindings from flexing down while skiing, but this years are located directly under the pivot point. I don't think they will effect touring (should have a chance to try both), but they may add just a little more support.

I have the choice of either ski since they're both in my possession after mounting. One pair has a much darker topsheet, and the other has the 06/07 bindings. I think I'll take that faded topsheet.

Hmmm...well, I wonder then if the nubbins or the other rubber ramp thingy on last year's version are moreso there just to smooth out the touring stride, rather than provide any real stability while in downhill mode...

I was kind of skeptical in the other post that they really did much...it would seemingly be hard for it to flex down much when the rail is locked down...there just isn't any room for it to move, really...

after playing with them some more, I agree, probably more tour oriented than skiing stability. When locked down they already have another solid contact point under the forefoot. I might question the durability of these 'nubbins' if they're going to flex with every stride, seems like they will eventually crack. The old design is just a solid wedge of rubber to give a slighty pivot point, no moving. I guess we'll find out.

I've got this years N21's and I have noticed that "nubbin" when touring. It feels like some kind of damper.
