How often do I need to apply that palm leather ointment?
Should I apply it before I even use them, or is it even necessary?

I think you are fine for a few days - then the next day you get soggy paws dry the gloves then waterproof with your balm of choice - snowseal, nicwax, or the stuff you got w/ your hestras.

As much as you lube up your palm anyway, the glove is probably ok.

necessary? no, not if you don't mind soggy hands after they pack out. i'd recommend sealing them before they see snow and whenever the pores of the leather are blatantly obvious. this will greatly enhance the life of the glove.

on another note, what do you, the collective, usually use to heat your gloves to ready them for waterproofing?

I've found a hairdryer works well for this purpose (also good for waterproofing boots).

What Mars said, just get em warm. Rub in goop, wipe excess and you are good to go. I love my Hestra's so far.

    Repeat when needed.

Mine soaked through today, maybe 6-8 days of use since I used the leather balm, granted it was raining, and they gloves have already seen a lot of rope work. I will be reapplying soon.

I just applied and used the hair dryer method to heat them up.
