How critical is it that the heel throw is mounted exactly perfect?
ie for the end of the aluminum rails to match up to the line
3ish mm forward ok or not ok?
edit: I see the manual says +/- 1.5mm, just looking for practical experience here

btw- sorry, but i haven;t made it to ship those throws. will do next week...
hey no worries.
I bought a pair and had them mounted at a shop.
They got one perfect and the other heel throw mounted too far back so theres a 3mm gap between the line and the back of the rails.
what would you say, yay or nay on going back and bitching?
the place closes at 9, so if anyone can chime in I can head back over there
rei
first time they screwed up a mount of mine
maybe ski them onbounds to see if it'll tele.
you for sure DO NOT want it to tele. those turns are for gapers.
besides that concern, the little yellow triangular nub on the heel throw lock doesnt exactly line up fore\aft with the hole in the plastic end cap on the tracks.
so instead of nicely resting on either side of the nub, the rails are resting on the reward face of the triangular nub. looks like its flexing it a bit when I apply hand pressure. wondering if its enough to cause long term problems
sounds like a remount... were the skis new? or used? this sucks... rei for sure owes you something.
skis were used for 2 days mounted 1x before (last years 186 LP)
i dont think they can correct 3mm with a remount.
for sure the holes would overlap.
any idea what to ask for?
might head back over there tonight
oh and I am not willing at all to let them move the mount forward at all
from what Ive read, this ski needs to be mounted at 79.5cm from the tail
Damn that sucks. I just had some Naxos mounted, but no problems. Im guessing that 3mm is a bit too much to ensure that the binding will work as it should. REI definetly owes you something but what is the question and yeah the holes would definetly get in the way of each other. Curious, do you know how it happened? or did you get home and find out? Unless they accidentally knocked the jig or went paper for some reason then they shouldnt have had any problems.
well i just got back and the guy totally saw how he messed up the mount and appologized. "geez how did I do that" came out of his mouth a couple times.
right now hes going to plug\epoxy the three heel throw holes, redrill 3mm forward, and reinstall the heel throw. kinda sucks to have "extra" holes, but i feel fairly comfortable that they wont rip out due to having "3 sides" of contact with the wood core and metal topsheet as well as the "other side" that will contact the plastic plug that should expand a little bit and grip onto the existing threads from the original holes in combination with the epoxy.
if they do rip out, the tech and store manager felt that new skis would definitely be in order.
theyre also gonna refund the original money for the mount.
they really stood behind their satisfaction garuntee
Yeah, I was pretty sure that if anything should happen that new skis would be given. I work at MEC which is the Canadian version of REI and we would have done and have done the same deal when the techs have slightly messed up here and there. Is 3mm really enough room for a remount? It will be close to say the least.
get a refund or a new ski. they fucked it up. if the rail doesnt fit properly, ull be banging out a turn one day and the whole thing will compromise or go into tele mode.
while they did screw it up, they are going to make it right
also id have an issue with asking for a new ski since it was used to begin with
if it does rip out or wont stay locked or whatever, i will be going back and asking for something. thanks for the input everyone, but I think itll be fine the way they're fixing it.
I'd recommend putting in 3 inserts (nylon, brass or heli coil) into the back of the ski in the right place. THe holes drilled for most of these types of inserts are 8 or 9mm in diameter so it will completely get rid of the old holes if they are only 3mm off. With using these inserts it'll be even stronger than before. The only down side is that the tech will have to be very precise and have the right equipment and if they did mess up again there is no going back. It's pretty much time for a new set of skis.
As for the 3mm space thing I wouldn't recommend going for it. Our general standard is 10mm centre to centre on the holes minimum and 10mm from edge to edge if we have a choice, somewhat dependent on the ski. It might hold but if it doesn't that's going to be one shitty day for you.
