Cheap Boot Fix?

My boots got pretty well packed out- to the point that it is really impacting my skiing. I know I should buy new, smaller boots or get a pro boot fitter to help me out but I am having a hard enough time scraping up enough cash for the drive to the mtns. I already have one of those semi-custom footbeds, can I put something under that to decrease the volume of the inside of my boot? I dont think I should put more layers of socks on, that can't be good.

Suggestions, help please?

Semi-custom footbed. Like a trim to fit Superfeet?

Cork. Are you refering to using additional padding or a cork footbed?

Beyond the obvious that you have already stated, in replacing them. What areas are troubling? Is it your entire boot, or the foot area? Cuff?

You can used any closed cell foam (closed cell, will not compact as much as open), you can find to modify the fit of the boot.
You can make your own or buy cheaply from a shop "butterflies" which will wrap the heel area, keeping it in place and taking room up in that area.

Those are amazing. I had some put in on my new boot liners and they locked my foot down way more than I thought possible.

If the bot shell is too big adding padding will help for a while but will pack out again.
1 to 2 cm behind your heel wit the liner removed is about all you want any more and its too big a shell

Temp fixes include the butterfly pads, extra foot beds below the current one etc.

CaddyDaddy77- My big problem is excess room surrounding my foot, mainly my toes. I can crank the cuff area down (causing mild shin splints) but I can deal with that. The cork I refer to is additional padding. The semi-custom footbed I was referring to is just a footbed that I bought for $30 a few years ago, it offers more padding, better arch support, and a "custom fit" when it packs in a little, no heat forming or anything special involved.

Can I get some closed cell foam from a shop?

Yes, most shops should have butterflies, and most will also carry sheets of foam to cut out for different applications.

I would really recommend focusing on the heel area, generally speaking this is where you control the entire foot, if it is snug, you should not thave to tighten the toe area significantly. Many people overtighten this area and result in foot cramping, cold or numb feet etc.

As mntlion mentioned, additional footbeds, etc will take up volume in the liner, but will eventually pack out, but may get you through the season.


Try your local shop explain your situation and lack of funds and most will be willing to help on a economic solution. A good tech will realize your need for a new pair, even if it's not immediate and should work towards the future sale.

Sweet, will do the butterfly or additional footbed fix for now. Hopefully a good internship or profitable summer job will afford new boots (NEW GEAR!). Thanks for the help.
