More camera jong questions (Canon specific)

Looking for an 'affordable' wide angle. probably around 15ish mm. the 12-20ish would also be nice.

New/Used is fine. its gonna primarily be used on boats. (I thought I saw a maggot selling one not too long ago? Did it sell? Summit maybe?)

Probably could use a zoom tele around 300.

The tele I can tripod, and im not overly concerned with IS (its nice but not worth the extra money to me)

    Thoughts? Ideas?

First and most important question: How much are you willing to spend?

I'll go up to around $500ish.

I got an XTi on a fantastic deal, so there's wiggle room here.

I keep seeing Canon's 14mm super wide for sale around the web...they want a mere $1400 and change... ya gotta be jokin me. I'd like to hear some suggestions too.

I asked this same question of a photog friend the other day, and he sent me a sample shot from an 8mm on his 1D, which he said was equiv to a 12.8mm because of the frame sensor magnification factor. Looked cool, and appeared rectilinear (not the round fisheye look with black in the corners) but probably heavily self-corrected. I have wanted to take some shots from inside the cockpit of my plane(of the cockpit itself, not outside), which I think would require a really short focal length. Shooting from the sailboat might be similar, I dunno.

I've typically got about 70 feet to work with.

So a super wide, but not a fisheye. There are actually some decent looking 15mm fisheyes from canon right over $500.

Canon Fisheye EF 15mm f/2.8 Autofocus Lens

Wide angle for a good price too. 20mm appears to be the smallest you can go without getting into nutty-expensive L glass.

Canon Super Wide Angle EF 20mm f/2.8 USM Autofocus Lens

Edit: Stay away from zoom lenses. If you're willing to spend that kind of money on a single specialized lens, you're gonna get shitty glass in a zoom.

Sigma makes an 8mm for Canon EF it produces a slightly cropped fisheye perspective. Peleng makes a piece of shit 8mm fisheye for Canon. ~13mm on the APS is pretty close to Fisheye perspective - not terribly weird. I've the Nikon 10.5 which is about enough fish for me.

Here's the shot from the 8mm. Even though it's prob overkill for what you want, somebody might be curious. Yeah, his truck is rather messy.
