    Torn Hammy Help

Well a few months ago (April) I was in Tahoe, Cali snowboarding and I ended up tearing (I think) my hamstring.. I never went to the doctor b/c I don't have insurance but that's my moms fault .. Anyways, it's December now and it's still giving me hell... I've done a little bit of PT over the summer but I didn't want to push it... The muscle mass is still considerably different between my two thighs and Snowboarding season is almost here (I live in michigan)... I compete regularly and I'm scared that it might not be ready for Later december/early january... Any1 have any ideas of stretches/workouts I could do in order to prep me for the upcoming season?

btw, this will be my 11th year riding and sadly enough I'm not sure how much my hams are used while boarding.. I figure it's mostly quads cause my quads are beasts (I have big muscle indifference between my hams in quads which probably caused the tear in the first place).... I plan on riding with some ace bandage around it, is this a good/bad idea?

    thanks, Gene

the support for the hammy is a good idea to start with. Get in the gym and hit the hamstring curl, squats, and lunges. Some balance work too. Don't forget to stretch.

Thx, I don't have access to a local gym really.. Our school has a gym but it's basically reserved for the bball team... I have been stretching daily and doing
straight leg dead lifts for awhile and that's been doing pretty good... I'll try some lunge exercises! Btw, what do you mean by balance work?

Take a yoga class once or twice a week. Let the instructor know about your hamstring. She or he should be able to give you advice on what you can do outside of the class to help you out. Yoga is great for flexibility, strength, balance and breathing techniques. A lot more of a workout than you might think. A bonus is there are usually hot chicks in the classes too.
If you had a nickel for every nickel he has, you would have a lot of fuckin' nickels!

I would if I could. I live in a rather small community. Don't have anywhere that does things like yoga and what not :/

I been stretching A LOT the past week and a half or so + doing straight legged dead lifts and that has surprisingly helped a lot.

Is the hammy sore or just feels weak? More reps, less weight is always a good way to help rehab your hammy with the straight legged dead lifts. You may want to try some leg lunges too. Stretching after it's nice and warmed up is always a good thing. I had a slight tear of my right hamstring about 4 weeks ago. It still bothers me but I've found that spinning on my bike trainer for 30 minutes seems to work for me. After a good stretch, I will ice it down if it's sore. I skied on it two weeks after I pulled it and I was not too bad off. Seems to hurt more when I'm just walking than skiing.

Yea, it's doing pretty good now.. Starting to get a bit of muscle mass back, though it's been almost 7 months now.... I didn't really do any training though in the first few months which is shitty on my part. I figured it'd just heal itself on its own just like any other injury I've had... I'm beginning to be able to run again.. But it still is a pain in the ass when I make quick sudden movements.. The other day I slipped on a patch of ice and my leg just killed... I'm going boarding within the next 2 weeks so I'm pretty nervous to see how it feels..
