    Snow Rangers

Anyone here use volkl Snow Rangers? There's a pair going for cheap in the consignment section of work, and I'm wondering if I should pick them up.

The Snow Ranger is a great ski. It's beefy, has less sidecut - so it won't be as hooky as something with a (lot) shorter turn radius - for those high speed powder & crud runs you'll be making on your heli day.

Sidecut dimensions are 105/79/98_=_30.2m turn radius @ 190cm

    How cheap is cheap?

    What size?

    Flat or with binders?

    Best. Rock. Skis. Ever.

Titanal layer just under base = no core shots.

I've been trying to kill mine for three years and haven't succeeded. The base is about half JB Weld now, but there's only one small edge compression -- from a hit that would have exploded any other ski.

Basically they're an Explosiv, just 15mm skinnier.

I'd rock those fer sher, the 997s are a good binder (assuming they're in ok shape) and that retro look on the Snow Rangers will have the Camelback cougars all over yo' ass.

I have 180 Snowrangers for my AT set up with Diamir IIs. It's great. Bashes crud pretty well, floats okay, and the minimal sidecut helps with edge grip on steep icy slopes. $150 is a deal.

There is no doubt that they were a great ski, 10 years ago. But the design is pretty dated.

Dated? Sandwich construction w/ a vertical sidewalls, less sidecut for ice grip, bomber bases? Heh, the colors are even coming back!
When it all boils down, a ski is a ski. They didn't start putting flux capacitors in the things. $150 is a pretty good deal (and if I'm not mistaken, the 997's where the the last of the non-superhighDIN with the metal heel pieces).

The Explosiv is even older. Doesn't matter, it's a great design.

Remember that there were no other mid-fats when the Snow Ranger came out. It was way ahead of its time.

Are there better skis now? Sure. But not for $150.

    Edit: typo.

    Well . . . .

For a buck fifty, you can't go wrong. Did you buy them?

Well the value of them doubled when I took them home last night, because now there are Beavis and Butthead stickers on the topsheets! Can't wait to try 'em out tomorrow at Blue(ice) Mountain. We might get an inch of snow tonight, which equals a poweder day in the poconos!

Just finished up a 4 hour session on poconos powder (they use a zamboni to groom this stuff) on the snow rangers. Holy shit, this ski is amazing on ice. I was bombing the steeps all night, and have never felt this confident on icy hardpack. This looks like it'll be my main ski from now on. Only downfall: not to good in the moguls, but what do you expect from a 79mm waist?
