Question Backcountry / Avalanche Awareness Lectures - Helpful or Not?

Are Backcountry / Avalanche Awareness lectures worth attending? Always, Sometimes, Never, Only if not Avalanche Level 1 certified

I am hoping to learn more about backcountry / avalanche awareness and would appreciate your input about what you learned from these types of lectures which vary from 1 hour to 3 hours and from free to $20.

    A) Please vote.

    B) Please post the presenting organizations and/or presenters' names plus lecture locations (city, state/province) and lecture name/attendance year (if easily recalled) of those lectures that you have attended.

    C) What did you learn/were glad to be reminded of (memorable quotes, facts, methods, etc.)?

    D) If you are aware of any other upcoming backcountry / avalanche awareness lectures that are not listed below or changes to the listings, please post info and links. This is not a question about Avalanche Level 1-2-3 certification multi-day type courses which will be addressed in a separate thread.

To prompt your memory I have listed below the Fall 2006 - Winter 2007 backcountry / avalanche awareness lectures that I know of organized by state/province & city/metropolitan area.

Avalanches are a common and spectacular occurrence in the snowy mountains, but in their physical beauty, they hide a brutal truth. There are as many myths about avalanches as there are snowflakes... and no snowflake is the same! These misperceptions about avalanches can have dire consequences: Every year, people get hurt or die in the winter backcountry due to avalanches. Colorado is known for its “champagne powder”, but also as the nationwide leader of avalanche accidents. Know Before You Go: Intro to Avalanche Awareness

The Wasatch Front is home to some of the world's finest winter backcountry terrain. But the rise in popularity of backcountry skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling comes with an increased risk in avalanche danger. In this evening's presentation, a local avalanche professional will tell their story about close calls or accidents they have experienced in the backcountry and show a narrated video of avalanches, people triggering avalanches and the destructive power of avalanches. This presentation will then focus on instruction on the basics of how to recognize avalanche terrain & obvious signs of instability, safe travel practices, basics of avalanche rescue equipment and self-rescue procedures, and where to obtain information about current avalanche conditions. The Know Before You Go avalanche education program is an all ages and family event presented by experts from the Utah Avalanche Forecast Center. Dealing with bad Layers" - Learning from Avalanche Tragedies in Canada 2002-2003
Power Point presentation that parallels the new Level II avalanche course emphasizing "Persistent Snowpack Weakness" that has been created by Gary Brill. The focus of both of the new programs is not so much on detailing each accident but rather on analyzing common threads that run through the accidents. These programs utilize an historical look back at the highly unusual snowpack in Canada last winter as a vehicle for presentation of relevant materials and current thinking and theories on persistent snowpack weaknesses, a key factor in as many as 80% of recreational avalanche accidents. This presentation will be most effective for individuals who already have basic avalanche knowledge. The clinics last about an hour and a half. http://www.avalanchesafety.org/defau...ive_page_id=91

Snowstruck: In the Grip of Avalanches

Every year around the globe, people cross paths with avalanches—some massive, some no deeper than a pizza box—with deadly results.
Avalanche expert Jill Fredston stalks these so-called freaks of nature, forecasting where and when they will strike, deliberately triggering them with explosives, teaching potential victims how to stay alive, and leading rescue efforts when tragedy strikes.
In SNOWSTRUCK, Fredston draws on decades of personal experience to take “avalanches out of the statistical realm and into the human one” (Skiing Magazine): a skier making what may prove his final decision, a victim buried so tightly that he can’t move a finger, rescuers racing both time and weather, forecasters treading the line between reasonable risk and danger.
Fredston brings to life the awesome forces of nature that can turn the mountains deadly—and the equally inexorable forces of human nature that lure us time and again into treacherous terrain.

My feeling has always been that people assume that they can use an "awareness" lecture as a substitute to an Avy I and it gives them a false sense of knowledge or security to head into the BC.

In my opinion the only time you should go into the BC is with someone who is more experienced than you and/or you are Avy I certified....

My biggest problem with avy 1 is that it teaches you to recognize avy terrain and avoid it. It does not teach you how to know when you can safely ski in avy terrain. It does introduce you to a few of the easy snow stability tests of course, but pits and tests are highly variable, and are only good for a localized point of reference. Ive dug pits 100 feet away from eachother on the same aspect and elevation and found extremley(spelling) conflicting results. What I wanna know(and why most people on this board take avy 1 for)is when that couloir/snowfield is filled with powder, when is it is safe to ski, not just that it is potentially an avy hazard(duh). Thats why Ill be doing level 2 this winter.

Avy 2 won't teach you that either - it takes time and experience.

cj001f - I'm actually going to agree with this you on this one - experience is key. Taking a course, level 1,2,3 whatever teaches you how to think, how to see the snow and terrain and make good decissions. With experience you can make these decisions on a smaller and smaller scale i.e: go from - sh*t son, I'm not going out today - to - hmm I'm sticking to North facing slopes and I'm not going up past treeline - to - well I can get up to the alpine safley if I use those terrain features and then ski down over - etc.

Education also teaches you how to deal with things when the sh*t hits the fan. But again it would be unwise to play with your beacon in the store and then never turn it to recieve again untill things go wrong. You've gotta practice.

Infact I would even go as far as to say lots of experience is way better than lots of education. I ski with a bunch of guys who reasearch avalanches... they are as educated as you can get but they spend most of their time in an office. I also ski with some guides and patrollers who don't know as much about fracture mechanics and runnout dynamics but work in avalanche terain every day. Who do you think makes better decisions in the backcountry?

Ski4fun - I'm not saying "don't get educated", if you are intersted go to as many lecutures as you can you will learn some neat stuff and you will probably meet some cool people. But, if you want my advice the best way for a backcountry jong to learn more about backcountry / avalanche awareness is to get out there and experience it. Find someone who knows whats up - start small and take it slow - but go play in the snow.
