having never actually been to a ski swap, do they actually dump leftovers in the dumpsters thus allowing thrifty skiers to go dumpster diving?

i keep meaning to go to the dump near my folks house as they have a section where you can dump useable trash like bikes, skis, wardrobes, etc. I think you pay them a small fee if you actually end up taking anything away.

Hmmm... never really been to a dump to look for skis... kinda sounds interesting, though.
Mostly, the skis that are in the trash bins around ski swaps are very old, with binders that don't pass their list (i.e. look turntables with the brakes on the toe, old marker twincams, etc)... and the people just dump them instead of taking them back home. Usually, they're all around 195-205 pencils, which make a great setup for dummy downhills, but are of little other use.
Or, in my case, they wouldn't let them sell the Big Fats because of a blown edge... a little marine epoxy as per marshalolson's advice, and we're good to go.
Those old skis make great bench materials, too...

I think FlexonPhil is making some sort of furniture out of some old skis (can't recall if it's a bed frame or a bench, though).

Yeah, our dump has this special section where you unload stuff that might be of use/interest to somebody else. Good way to score a bike for Burning Man or some skis for that bench.

I have bought 6 pair of skis since spring. I have been quietly slipping them into my closet behind my clothes. 2 days ago, I had my closet open and my wife strolls in and spies the tails of the skis. Not a word was said but I received a dose of the "hairy eyeball" as she walked out of the room.

I got 2 pairs this year, my first year living in the mountains.

I got some craptastic K2 omni or some shyte 167's that came with bindings that were used as a sport package for rentals last year for super-duper cheap. They are my rock skis.

For my "good" pair, I have some of last years K2 Mt. Baker's in 167, and they are tits. I can't wait til we get a decent storm so I can go out and play on them!

I also have my trusty snowboard for when I feel like swinging the other way, but for now, the rock ski's are where its at.

Since you mentioned the gear list, would you be interested in a trade for 190 Volkl Snow Rangers, near-mint condition? Tops, bases, edges all look immaculate -- like 1-2 days use, max. Currently mounted with Salomon 900 Equipe IIRC (may be 997 Equipe -- can't remember offhand); whichever one it is, it's a 6-14 DIN binding.
They are Axial 2s from last season. I'm more interested in the wider end of the gear list but maybe a partial trade could be done. Got any cool boots?

No boots, except those I'm using...

I'm not particularly fond of the Axial 2, but if you have an interest in the Snow Ranger setup, let me know -- I'm open for partial trade ideas.
