does size matter? Dynastar Legend 8800

Found a killer deal on a pair of Dynastar Legend 8800. I have some Nobis Inspired in 178 that I like but are very damp to the point of almost "dead".
I've wanted to try the 8800 and found a great deal on some new/unmounted 168s. I'm 5'7" tall and I'm ok w/ shorter skis when appropriate but I weigh 180 naked and am wondering if this is just too short.
They'll mostly be used in area for lots of different kinds of snow and I'm fairly likely to ski tele on 180 Wk Stx or AT on 177 Reverends (or even the 178 Nobis) when things are really soft and/or deep.
    Too short?

I am 5' 10" and weigh 150 # I ride the 8800 in 178 cm. I wouldn't go with the 168 unless it was for on piste, chunk, tree's and lighter pow days.

A great ski for quick turns, real good at chunk and chopped, stable at speed and has a medium turning radius.

for sure a great ski but at 168 cm it will have limitations when it gets deeper at speed.

It's a shame we don't have a forum for questions like this.

I have a pair of 05/06 178 8800s in really good condition that I'm thinking about selling. PM if interested, I'm in WA for a couple more weeks and then driving down to the bay area.

Yeah this belongs in tech talk. but since I am feelin good as in 3 days I will be rippin up keystone.

168s will for sure be to short. IMO ski length is dependent on speed and skill mostly(how does your ski know how tall you are? a ski will bend the same with 180 lb at 5'5 and 180 at 6 foot). thats the reason lighter and shorter skiers on this site(girls and the lighter guys) still ski on what the normal public deems huge skis. Are minds and skills are only capable of so much compensation for short skis, keeping in balance at speed is tough on short skis regardless of you sex, age, height, weight elect. Being light they may lose alittle in tight turns or moguls but the longer lengths make it easier to rip though soft snow conditions. Stick with the 178s at a min.

I'm 5'10, 210 and I ski the 188 and it's not a lot of ski. It's the same ski as your Nobis Inspired as far as I know, so think about how it would feel 10cm shorter. At your weight 168 is too small in my opinion.

height does matter to some extent. 5'5'' and 180 IS different from 6' and 180. if you're taller, you basically have more torque to apply to the ski with your body being a longer arm to leverage the ski. you can flex a ski more easily if you're taller. i hope that makes sense.

case in point, i'm 6' but only 140lbs and i can handle bigger skis when i'm appropriately aggressive and/or in shape.

it's just good (or bad?) genes. when i played high school water polo and was working out 2 hours a day, 5 days a week and eating as much protein as i could, i got up to 155. once i got to college and stopped working out, i lost the weight very quickly. even when i eat tons of crappy food and drink lots of crappy beer, i don't gain weight. my father was the same way. from what i understand, he was 5'11'' and 135 until his early 30's.

Good lord! I'm 5'8" and 140lbs and people tell me I'm too skinny!

    What skis are you riding?

Myself, I have 185 Blowers on the way and have been riding 178 Cross-Ride 110s for 6 years.

Sack up for the 188. They are perfectly manageable. These skis are awesome, but by no means super stiff or heavy. The 188 can throw down some outstanding turns, so no matter what conditions, I dont think youll regret going for the longer ski.

He's off to Snowbird with a detour for the 36 hours of keystone. I should be following him out west a few weeks later. Still debating between offers in Alta and JHMR.

for powder i have legend 8800's in 178 (new last season). i hate making short turns, and they hold up to high speed in soft snow just fine for me (unlike some powder skis i've demo'd in the past).

for hard snow i have some old K2 Fours at 183, which is honestly a bit short in that ski for me. despite that, they are a great ski and i've had a lot of fun on them. i'm looking to replace them this year with volkl allstar supersports at 182. that's probably on the long end for that ski for me, but 175 is too short and i need motivation to get into better shape anyway.

3 years ago i tried a pair of salomon xscream extra hot's in like 188 or so, and they were noticeably on the large side for me, although they were a lot of fun in big open bowls.

I'm 6'2, 175, have a pair of 8800s at 178cm and couldn't be happier. I'm also on the east coast and prefer a shorter ski. If you're out west you might want the length - in wide-open NZ I rocked a pair of 190s no problem.

But if I were out west, I would go fatter

I have ridden the 8800 quite a bit. It has enough sidecut to carve it up when you hit the corduroy, wide enough to help keep you afloat and to power through crud. I'm 5'8 175 and ride the 178, I mounted it standard, but think that it would be better to remount it 1 or 1.5 cm forward. I would definitely suggest getting a pair of these things, they are awesome and can seriously take a beating. Durable top sheet too.

Want to buy a pair of 178's that have been skied about 5 times? I mounted them with Naxo's and have never even had the chance to tour with them. They are last years. I can hook you up with a binding if you need it too. Let me know what you think
