just curious of what k2 model he used, saw some custom looking skis in the powder buyers guide that had the article about him.

FWIW, in The Waiting Game, he had some BD Havocs with K2 stickers over the logos
yeah i have definatly seen pics of him on pistols/vicious
last year it was off-the-shelf SVs w/ the tails chopped.
seriously.
said he liked the flex better that way.

True dat. Also because the SV/SP tails are a frikkin bitch stuffing into the La Grave tram. Cut off like that made them a lot easier fit in. I think I've seen him on somethin Apache-looking too; but normally he seemed to be on his yellow cutoff SP's over the past few years
self unemployed?
Not afraid of my jongness here, so:
1. does cutting off the tails effect the performance of the ski?
2. what is meant by "facilitating anchor building"?
Thanks!
i was pondering about cutting the tails off some old gotama's ..........?????

this helps i am gonna atempt it i will post pics when it is all done
i'd like to see pictures of some successful twin tip surgery.
(and I've more or less figured out the answers to my Jongified questions from above).
true, but that's not why he did it. he felt it made them stiffer but in conversations with him i always said that hand-flexing by the tail (w/ the original twin) is not a true measure of he stiffness of a ski...it is more accurate to hand-flex with the point where the tail contacts the snow on the ground.
who am i to argue, though? he liked 'em better, even though the reason did not make logical sense.
they were stock SVs, otherwise. he was a primary designer/tester of the seths back in....'02 (or it might have been 6/01 when i first saw them on the protos).
He also spent a lot of time last year on the Apache Cheif replacement. That ski ended up getting named the Coomba after his accident, it'll be introduced to the market at SIA...
regarding perceived stiffness while skiing
If you chop off the tail, you have significantly reduced a skis mass, at a critical location, without changing its stiffness in any appreciable fashion. In essence, you have raised the skis natural frequency, (sqrt(k/m)). It will now probably feel more responsive\snappy\quick to react, especially in any fast manuever that will quickly accelerate the ski
[/enginerd crap]
hypothetical question:
do you think it's easier to chop off a pair of skis you were given or a pair that you bought with your hard earned dinero (I'd have to think that a skier of Coombs' level was getting free gear from K2, as well as many of the other pros that have been listed in this thread as having chopped skis).
Of course auto fiends have been chopping cars and motorcycle fiends have been chopping bikes for years, so it would stand to reason that ski fiends would follow suit.
Dibs on next yr's Chiefs. I hope his family see's some of it.
Tim Petrick the K2 VP of sales and Doug go way back, K2 is looking out for Emily and the family, they'll be getting most of the $$ from the Coomba. We'll probably hear more about that ski after the K2 global sales meeting in Germany next week...
They look sweet and they ski awesome, they're pretty much a wider Outlaw with a cooler graphic on it.
nice, heard mostly good things about the outlaw, maybe a little on the turny side, but overall a sweet ride. if they widen and stiffen it up a bit with less sidecut it would be a ski that would fill a niche K2 seems to be missing. always felt if the chief wasn't as noodly..................hope the coomba is it.
