    Thanksgiving in February ..

.. today was one of those days when you are driving to the hill - you have a mellow good feeling deep inside your soul that it's gonna be good day!!

... it did not disappoint. Powstash, Midget and I toured from the Canyons all around Desolation Lake. I still can't believe that I didn't realize the Canyons were sooooooooo close to Desolation Lake. Duh.

Anyway, touring from the Canyons is SICK and soooooooooo easy to farm good stashes with quick skins back up for more yummy goodies. I'll let the pics tell the story when they get posted - even though they prolly won't do it justice.

Driving home I had that tired, happy, fulfilled feeling come over me and I thought about just how thankful I was:

    for good friends
for this amazing playground we live in
for ski, binding and boot technology
for clothing technology that is equally amazing
    for good powder
for Gapers that leave it for us
    for blue skies
    for beautiful sunsets
for good food (fries and a sammy never tasted soooo good)
for 2 more Maggots met (Midget and Inspector Gadget)
and for plenty of tomorrows to do it all over again

Thanks K for a great day!!! Who would've thunk an Alta boy could have such a good time on the "East Side".

P.S. Gotamas with Freerides are a SICK, SICK, SICK touring setup!!!

Sorry we mised you xover and stash. We waited for a bit and didn't hear anything so we headed up/out. Did you see the little note for you at the top of 9990? I think I saw you at the top of knife ridge while we were at the bottom and heading back to deso lake.

Anyhow, I've got some pics I'll be posting here later of the day.

Midget, good to meet you, sorry I lost you though off the other side of the ridge, my skis were being way to funky and I could hardly even glide over to where you were. We'll catch up again.

edit: and yes, untracked thigh deep pow freshies under bluebird sky were had today.

    P.S. The Canyons b.c. is no good.[/jedimindtrick]

I had this as a separate post, but....

My story in four short parts, though not necessarily in chronolgical order:

I, too, skied at The Canyons today:
Unfortunately I missed boarderline - sorry. Hooked up with some kids from Provo as we were all hiking for some turns in the days-old powder. I got two great runs - Easter Bowl and McDonalds - before heading for the office at about 1 PM.

I tripled the number of maggots I know today!
I met Midget and rode a couple of chairs with him as we were catching up to Powstash and Xover. Powstash introduced me to Xover; the three of them were on their A/T gear and they headed into the back country. It was nice to meet Midget and Xover, even if we didn't ski together.

In response to phUnk's question about meeting goals this season:
Carrying decent speed, I dropped off an eight to ten foot cornice today. I suspect my style points weren't very high as I damn near went over the bars when I landed, but I quickly gathered myself up and made turns to the bottom of the pitch. Small sack? Yes. But some is better than none and it felt good.

I'm not superstitious, but it is Friday the 13th.
I got to The Canyons and didn't have my pass. As luck would have it, I ran into my Valentine in the parking lot and she offered me one of the precious few comp tickets she gets for the season. Riding up the gondola with some nice tourists, I jokingly commented about the start of my Friday the 13th. Whereupon one of them told me we were riding in car number thirteen . . . sure enough. The humor was not lost on me.

It sounds like the three Musketeers had a great time in the back country today; can't wait to see the photos. Hopefully I be able to join you next time.

I agree! Don't Gapers suck? Good thing we're so much better than them.

Indeed, today was a near perfect day. Great pow, new terrain, introducing Xover to the rest of the wasatch that isn't within ALTA's borders, hearing him drop in the Knife and the first turn he's says "oh, no it's wind blown" and then I see him enter the "love snow" and he then repeats "SICK, SICK, SICK!!!" all the way down, a super blue cobalt sky, the list could go on forever.

    Indeed I am thankful.

More photos to follow. For now, enjoy these take by midget today, I hope he's cool with me posting them

I'm getting the love pow at Desolation Lake

Xover drops in the knife - "SICK SICK SICK" Trust me, it's creamy although it looks wind hammered

"That didn't suck" - I'm getting some creamy pow.

Heh, you guys must have been right behind us. I think that line just to the left of the treeline is mine, or it's the first one on the left up in the corner. Hard to tell with the couple trees in the foreground there.

Fun day today. Sorry I missed y'all, much to my dismay I arrived at Surefoot at 9:10 and didn't see anyone. Next time.

Looks like you guys had some nice shots in the BC, nice pics!

Onto a rather disjointed list of first impressions of The Canyons. Freakin' huge! Would love to return when there's two feet of fresh. Lifts and runs as far as the eye could see. Lots of powder still available on 9990 in the trees after a short traverse. Some excellent sustained steep shots. Lots of tourists in one pieces. Excellent grooming and super long runs for early morning screamer warmup runs at mach looney. Park sucked, poorly laid out and the run was too flat to make adequate use of the jumps.

It was definately a place to return to.

    boarderline,

Truth be told, we were all running late. It was 9:30 before any of us got to Surefoot. Let's try again.

As for the park, the location is new this year. It dramatically changed the character of Snow Canyon. I don't know where it's going next year, but I'm told they're moving the park to another location.

edited to say Midget got there before the rest of us

I got there about 9:25, gaget around 9:30, powstash and x-over about 9:35.

Sorry the pics didn't do it much justice, but I was accross on top the ridge around square top when I took those shots......just a couple thousand feet away....thats all! Those 2 were with a 400mm lens....I really couldn't get much closer!

Can't wait for more snow, it was only my second day touring this year....

Was great to meet some new maggots!

    Midg,

Cool perspective on those shots; what digi set up you using?

    Monkey,

I will be back over to the "East Side" again soon; ya know we'll hook up then. That lil roll in the skin track in your 6th pick sent me head first over the bars into the snow (note to self: don't forget to lock Freerides when decending with skins or for that matter without skins).

Guess we'll have to wait for P'Stash to post the smoke blowing pics.

x-over...shooting with an EOS 1D. It's a digi SLR. I think you saw the big daddy lens ask powstash was coming down deso too....that was the 100-400. It's pretty retarded how much zoom I have with that thing.

Here are some additional photos. Xover, if you want the high res photos, I'll burn 'em to a disc for ya.

Too bad I suck as a photog or these would've been better. The good images are in my head for good. Those are the best images.

You guys weren't messing around. Lots of natural aid on that skin track.

Did you happen to see that skin track going right across the slope we skied on the peak on the end of the knife? (long distance photos above) Foogin' idiots putting skin tracks up the center of a perfectly good pow slope.
