I think my washer is tits up

went and started a load of laundry (probably the first time in 2006), and went up stairs to read. came back down after 5 minutes and the washer was not on anymore.
opened it and it was still full of water, and my clothes thank god.
i know it was started when i left.
it was not over flowing with clothes.
i had just done another load previous to it.

WTF?

someone want to help me out here?

A little inside info for everyone- I was Lars' high school photography teacher.
I don't know if i should be embarrassed by this fact or not, considering his present situation!

Had something similar happen to me -- the washer didn't think the lid was closed and so just filled with water but didn't start actually washing.
The little trigger that the lid hit when it was down had busted off and needed replaced before things started working happily again.
