Full Face Helmets w/ removeable chin gaurds.

So I've had my share of crashes and a taken a couple knee to chin hits but never really worried about them till I went up skiing this weekend. I saw a ski patroler who was an amazing skier but he was missing like 4 teeth in the front of his mouth and it looked pretty bad. So now I am fully considering a full face but I think people skiing mellower stuff in bounds with them on just look gehy as fuck. Infact I have laughed at more than a few people skiing down under the chair lift with them on.

So are there any good full face masks that have a removeble chin gaurd so that on days when I am hucking and skiing more tech lines I can rock it and be safe and then take it off when I am just enjoying some lower key days.?

All your posts that I have seen thus far contain at least one comment that makes you look like you are either:

    A. Trying to sound 'core.
    B. A douche.
    C. Both.

^^Just guessing, he could be saying it could be because you seem eminently more worried about what people will think of your look while skiing inbounds as opposed to your personal safety.

Ironically people may laugh at your missing teeth almost as often as your full face helmet. Why remove the chin guard? What if you wanna huck inbounds (has been done once or twice before I hear )? Who cares how you look. Plus no one will recognise you in a fullface, duh.

Once again, that's just a guess.

Edit, heh, that's a funnier reason. (reapeat to self: shouldn't laugh at people bluntly making fun of other people)

    Fixed it for you

Really Phil please calm down a little. Perhaps it's a teenage thing? Try rubbing one off before rather than while posting.

Following up from the couple of previous posts, I dont think talking about "hook ups on giro shit" does a whole lot to avoid looking like a "douche"...... especially when you are talking about a product that was discontinued a few years ago. Just an observation

ok lol I get it I'm a douche I laugh at people thats never going to change. Also the um caring about how I look may just be a teenage thing but i do so thats why I asked about a mask with a removeable face gaurd. as for the laughing at people thing maybe Ill stop I know its not nice but last year I promised not to laugh at fat people anymore and I still do it so that might not work out. If I saw someone killing it down the slope with a full face I would not laugh but the people I have laughed at are usually doing safety turns down a really easy slope just being a general gaper

ok didnt even consider that making me look more like a douch, sorry. I was just saying it looked really sick.

Edit: and of course looking really sick is def. high on the priority list

Yeh Giro Flint SC has a removeable chin-guard. S'what I rock.
I only remove the helmet when I'm hiking though, 'cos I'm not psychic, so don't know when I'm going to slam my face in
I'm pretty sure Giro Mad Max does not.

Hey, if you take a look at Race Helmets, from whoever, Marker, Uvex, even Giro, you can often find there's a chin guard, or 2, that'll fit, making it kinda full face.

You know, if you really wanna pose, you should go with the Sweet Trooper Full Face. I think you can remove the front.

    Way too much $$'s true...
...but it is mostly Carbon Fiber, so that helps.
After all, the new Giro Remedy, made of CF, retails at $250...

    Back on topic:

The Flint SC is a pretty good helmet. I have one but rarely wear it (like may be 4 times in a few years). I've been eyeing a full-face bicycle helmet as a replacement. I find the Flint a bit too warm for me on most days. Its well ventilated, but I sweat like a pig since its so warm in Tahoe most of the time.

An IMPORTANT NOTE OF CAUTION: Helmets that are sold as Slalom helmets with a removeable chinguard should NOT be considered good for off-piste or even high-speed on piste skiing. Think of them as a bump cap. The guard is made to deflect a flexible plastic pole, not protect your pearly whites from a ski tip or worse.

I'd consider selling my Flint SC. Its size L or XL and blue/white painted. I took the visor off, but I may still have it somewhere. I find visors annoying since you can't easily put your goggles up on your helmet with one on. If someone is interested, PM me and I'll take a photo and get the details. Not sure what to ask for it. Its in very good shape. I've used it in a handful of BX, SL (on snowboard with full height skier gates - ouch) and SG races in the past few years. If helmets are only good for 5 years, this one only has one or two more seasons in it - if you live by those guidelines.

Let me know and I'll take some pics. Meanwhile, here's a picture of me wearing it in a Jeep King of the Mountain Race a couple years ago at Squaw. I know I'm going to catch grief for posting a picture of me in a speed suit.

I'm jumping the first double out of the "Y" in the course. The Y follows a set of about 10 PGS gates. If I remember correctly, it was about a 30' gap? After that jump there was hard banked left turn followed by a small double then a step-down double into a hard right turn. Then a pair of doubles on a flat section followed by a very hard banked left/right to a table top that was built too long for any of the riders - pro or amateur - to clear on qualifying day. It hurt like hell to land that thing on the table/knuckle before a short drop to the finish. For the Sunday finals they shortened the table and made the preceding corner a bit faster so you could carry more speed. Overall I had a ball at the race. Saturday I got to ride with a handful of US and Austrian World Cup and Olympic athletes. For an old fart weekend warrior, that was a blast.

Oh, one other note: I suspect that a mouthguard will do more to keep your teeth intact than a full-face helmet. My understanding is that most people knock out teeth by hitting their chin with their knee. I'm pretty sure that's the story behind why MTT has amazing looking chompers.

But why does everyone have a pic of him hanging out drinking in the parking lot?

    1. fullfaces protect more than just while hucking. kicking up ice balls, skiing through tight trees, etc.

    2. the point of a fullfac is maximum protection. removable chins reduce the stiffness of the chinbar. less protection.

if you don't need a fullface at all times, then buy a fullface and a reg. helmet.

Bingo! Removable guards usually don't have jawbone padding either, this padding will keep the fullface guard where it's supposed to be in impact situations. You can find Madmax's for cheap online.
