    went to snowbird sat.
coverage on the groomed was fine, i hit a couple rocks in some tracked out pow/crud. Not much open yet, just the gad valley. Keep in mind the forecast is hot and sunny all week, first chance of snow is thurs i believe

better coverage at alta... (wildcat, collins, supreme, and sunnyside open i believe...)

Snowbird had zoom, wilbere and mid gad open
and with no storms in sight, things are looking pretty shitty.
I personally don't think that the drive is worth it, but im spoiled.

If nothing its nice to get out of the valley for a little while i suppose

Not much coverage in the other canyon either. Seriously, like, go to Colorado.

i don't think it's worth a trip of more than 15 minutes. the coverage isn't all that great right now at snowbird and the snow is getting thinner as the heat and sliders remove snow. check colorado or the pnw for good coverage.

Agreed, I skied Alta on Saturday, snow was getting manky, probably worse now. I can't believe they had the High T open, it really gave rock skis a new meaning...

Thats about what I figured, I just gotta get on snow like now and CO doesn't really do it for me, the Sierras are still begging I think so where does a junkie go?

I thought alta used to wait until they had 50-60 inch base at the least to open. Did this change once they got the new chair? The old rule was pretty cool- now it will take a lot longer to cover rocks since skiers will keep sliding it off.

    You didn't miss much

    Phunk,
I hit Alta on Saturday and it was OK in the a.m. but definately nothing to write home about. Good move going climbing, I hit the river and fished today. See you tomorrow.

dude alta was great on saturday. If you brave the high T it was worth it for sure, first tracks in the nest, smooth and knee deep. But the forecast does look rather grim, and hot, unfortunately.

    Alta rules

Well made my semi-annual trip to alta(opening and closeing). Not much snow but the skiing was very good. The High t was horrible but the skiing was excelent once you got there(ands nobody was going out there). First run down rustler was amazing. untracked all the way down on the right in boot deep powder. Race course and sunspot also provided very good smooth skiing(bumped up at the end). Shoulder was also in very nice form(saw some guy launce a 30+ footer with only 20 inches of snow-He stuck it). Cant imagine they can keep the terrain open if it does not snow. The High- t was really funny. Almost as much rock as snow.

you people are not making me too excited about driving up to alta tomorrow @ 4am.
but 2 days off in a row is rare for me so i'm in a quandry.
noticed the base has dropped 3 inches since they opened on saturday and what all of you have stated above( sun and heat - fuck you high pressure) makes me think maybe i'll switch up my plans up and wait a week or so.

Wow, 35 inch base and the High-T was open; can't say I ever remember that being the case. I am suprised they had it open.

I was at Alta for my first time on Sat. It was ok but I was stoked because it was my first turns for the year. It was great in the morning and started to get skied out in the PM. The next day was not nearly as good but still good to be skiing.

Don't worry about it, thats just an early season phenomenon. Powder days at Alta get less crowded as the season goes on.

02-03 we had a 30-40" base thru january. they had a huge october or november storm with very little to follow until february.

Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better about wearing a t-shirt at work yesterday for a few hours. Grrrr!

2nd-ed to fineline (and thanks for convincing us to brave the high t) skiing on sat. was super awesome. the upper gate to the high-T was partially closed halfway through the day, but the lower gate was still open so we were still able to hit thirds (had to take the skis off to walk the rocks anyway). i skiied till 3, only 2 groomers the whole time, and had fantastic runs ALL day in fred's, west rus, lone pine, thirds, etc, etc (just had to pick my way through a few rocks here and there on either of the traverses, but it was definitely worth it).

but alas. this week looks grim and not worth waking up at 4am or driving 16 hours for. if i had a private jet and no responsibility i'd think about flying elsewhere

god I love it when little captions in this forum help me feel sane about life choices. I'm just sitting out here in front of buckaroo beanery in Crested Butte trying to figure out how to put a new starter in my explorer so I can drive it to Utah. My special ladyfriend was really hinting that it was time to go this morning (or at least get my own place) and, until I read this TR, I was off to go use my tram pass for saturday... Not anymore I'm gonna go tell her that I just couldn't fix it and borrow her sled. It's fuckin good out here... any Utards wanna come out here you just may be able to crash on my special ladyfriend's couch... if I still have one here in a few days.

I also skied for a bit this morning as well.

I normally love skiing fast on the groomers, but there are effing rocks on the groomers. Skiing is shit right now in the resorts, I'll just be honest about that right now.

Hopefully it snows while we are away, cause I need some pow, really soon.
    you sketchy character, you

SO, you are saying there is a possible horny 'rebound candidate' that would be open for a one-three day visitor? Hmmm. Gosey, your up!
