    Dog Shows

Why is it dog shows bring out major wierdness in people?

Was at one in Harrisburg, PA today, and wow, there was more cheap makeup on the fifty year old lady dog owners than the discount cosmetics aisle in Walmart could stock in a month. But the dogs didn't seem to mind at all, so maybe I'm overreacting.

On a positive note, one of the water diving dogs (they jump into water chasing a lure) had what was deemed to be a new record jump, at 30 ft. Nutmeg, a chocolate lab from upstate NY, jumped 29' 8" on her next try. She is eight years old, too.

because "dog people" lack the social skills to deal with humans and therefore are not held the social norms of everyone else
by "dog people" i refer to those people who actually show their dogs on a circuit not people who own dogs in general
and before anyone comes back with the "i'm a dog person and you are a prick flame fest"
    i submit:
i am the son of a vet who had to deal with these people on a regular basis because he married (my mom) the producer of championship level dogs in 3 breeds who is now a highly sought after judge in the dog show world
who subjected her 2 sons to entire summers of following the various circuits around North America
i have literally "seen it all" with regards to the levels these people will go to have their dogs "succeed" and i have yet to be exposed to any other group that is so knife your friend in the back to get the reward motivated (powder days have nothing on these people)

the movie "Best in Show" was not a comedy it was a documentary and pretty close to the truth....

dog people are followed closely by "horse people"....

At the top of the wierdness list is when owners, typically of large dogs, at a show, will intercept what you say to the dog, and then answer for the dog. As in:

Me: He looks real comfortable rolled up there under the table.
Owner: He says (in a simulated doggy voice) I'm just snuggling up to same my energy for the ring.

    or

Me: He must feel left out with all these big dogs around. --> Said to a small dog in a pen with several dogs twice the small dogs size.
Owner: (Gets small dog, pets him, and speaks) "Say, I think and play like I'm just one of the boys."

They always start out with "He says...", or "Say, ...", as if the dog is the dummy and they are the ventriloquist speaking for the dog, only they don't care if you see them speaking. And they think they get extra points if done in a simulated doggy voice, or at least the correct gender for the dog. If you ever go to a dog show, try it, you can carry on a conversation like this for say ten minutes.

You're not the first one to say that about the movie being close to reality. That's scary.

Best in show was not close to reality, it was spot on. There is not a person in that movie that I can't show you several real people in my vet practice who fit it perfectly. That movie was not fiction.
