stiffening boots - have i got the right idea?

    hi all,

i have pulled up a search before anyone canes me down but i did not get much.

in short - i am currently choosing between 2 boots. the tecnica diablo flame/magnesium. thier flex index's are 100 and 80 respecitvely.

at present i am leaning towards the flame. as i am 5'10 and 90kgs (so not massive) and i think the low cuff might be good. however i am an agressive skier so the lowish flex does worry me slightly.

SO...i was thinking do you guys think it would be a good idea to go with the flames, with a new custom footbed and ADD the tier 3 booster strap. my logic is that the boot fits well, the footbed will control my foot in the boot and hopefully the booster strap will make the boot a little stiffer and more responsive. therefore just slightly down grading from the magnesium. then in real pow days or park days i can put the old strap on and have softish boot.

or should i get the magnesiums and just make them softer on pow/park days?

messy guys this decision is killing me as i know which ever one i get i will worry it is either too soft or too stiff!

    thanks guys.

As a former bootfitter, it is easier to make a stiff boot softer than a soft boot stiffer.

damn! not what i wanted to hear. but thanks anyhow. do you have any experience with either of the boots i have discussed?

i am looking to crank it around the mountain but spend more time in the park/back country now. based on my stats and what i am after would you say the stiffer 100 felx boot or the softer 80 boot.

would you not say that the 80 flex boot would stiffen up a fair bit in the cold of bc and wyoming?

you're 200 lbs., get the 100 flex boot. if you charge at all you will overpower the softer one.

    your numbers are off too

the magnesium is the stiffer of the two. The flame is less stiff

I had(well, still do) the diablo fires (flex about 90) and they are a pretty flexy boot at my 160lbs

ya shell fit snug for sure. It totally goes against your initial impression when you put your foot in the first time, but def worth it. Go with the stiffer boot, neither of the ones you speak of are particularly burly. If you're driving long fat skis, you'll appreciate the response you'll get in the long run.
or you can get kryptons like i did this time around. With the shim, you can adjust flex pretty easily. stiff(er) for charging, softer for jumping.
