    Happy Birthday Frank Zappa

Like I tell most everyone on their birthday; age has nothing to do with dates or years passed, but is simply a state of mind. So keep getting after it you young whippersnapper.

When I was a young whippersnapper... I was in the peak years of my ski bum career, workin' as a surly bartender up at Loveland Basin. I had met these "old fuckers" and heard of the annual trip to Jackson they had been doin' for quite a few years. Well I bugged them about wantin' to go up there 'til I got the invite...

I show up bright and early ready to hit the road and as we're packin' I decide I'm the only young'un goin'. Well bein' a young cocky shit I says somethin' like "I'm gonna out ski and out drink all you old fuckers... All week long."

    Wrong thing to say!

Jesus, Talk about throwing down the gauntlet.

I tried the best I could (and still insist to this day that I did) to "hold my own"... The skiin' part went kinda OK... for about a day or two, 'til that one part kicks in. You know how the old sayin' goes "I've got tears in my eyes, and Jackson Hole thighs." Especially when on about the third day, apres ski at the moose, one of those "old fuckers" reaches over, when you're not lookin' of course, and puts the death vise grip on one of your thighs.

As for the second part, you know, the part about drinkin' some old fart under the table, I'd advise against it if you want your liver to last any substantial amount of time. Especially when you’re some lil' shit like I was (around 150 pounds) and those "old fuckers" - especially the one I aimed the gauntlet at - weighs in at around 320 pounds. I did manage to get myself kicked out of the Cowboy Bar within a matter of hours after arriving in town under this drinking plan.

All in all though, I've had some of the best times skiin' in my life with those "old fuckers" - who coincidently now are "really old fuckers" - and so I guess that puts me at just plain old "old fucker" status now. And I learned a lot from those folks too (mostly sick jokes). They’re in their mid fifties and sixties now and are all still getting’ after it. I hope to do as well.

As was said before, it’s a state of mind, (but don’t tell my aching body that). Hey, where did all that time go?… I musta been havin’ a hell of a lotta fun. And I still am, just not quite as fast and wild as I used to be.

Wasn’t able to get out today like I have almost always done, but I’ll make up some hookie time later when the snow gets good.

    Thanks all yous mags!

Boy, do I remember a lot of this ski trip...... Somewhere I have a lot of slides from that trip. Including you jumping off some big ass rock..... Trying to drink The Big Tuna under the table was a bad mistake....

Remember Tom, as my dad once said, "Its not the painjob, its the mileage...." Happy Birthday!!
