If you work three fucking jobs!

EDIT: We should have known that the bipartisan thread just urging people to vote for whatever they believe in, would be turned into a "debate anything slightly relevent to the issues relevent to voting" thread.

But Leroy, that fact has no bearing on the premise of the folks that are against Minimum wage increases...should minimium wage in Aspen be $5.50? would that allow minimum wage workers to have only one job, or need 5?

Ah, it's more of an internship-type thing? I didn't know.

Move it back to zero, then. Everyone knows that all those interns have rich parents. I for one am outraged that these rich bastards get paid actual money to flip my burgers.

That was kinda my point, that you can't live off minimum wage in most of the nation, even if you work two jobs.

it is more of a starting wage that people should build from. Also it was created during the depression and was not intended to go past the depression but did, like social security

So, what are you proposing, exactly?

    Trust fund residuals, for everyone?

I think he's proposing that we stop voting to manipulate the economy. Ya'll grit your teeth & bitch when the fed does it (me included,) now you want to give it your personal endorsement?

Unless, of course - you're willing to give up that 20% we talked about......

Yup, I did. Mail in absentee about a month ago.

I really like being able to look up info on any issue or candidate I'm not familiar with as I go down the card.

I wrote myself in for state treasurer, and I wrote in Iceman for governor of California.

I'll take that 20% pay cut. But then I'll get it right back again when the minimum wage is increased.

Net result is the same thing, right?
Actual measured results from minimum wage increases are not that simple. Most recent studies have shown no or minimal increase in unemployment with minimum wage increases, because low-wage jobs are inelastic (garbage will get emptied, toilets scrubbed whether or not the minimum wage increases). Of course it depends on the amount of min wage increase.
One counter-intuitive effect of minimum wage increases is to increase overall economic activity by putting more money in the pockets of people who will certainly spend it ("priming the pump").
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimum_wage for a nice non-simplistic overview.

Oh, I completely understand. But just because it's on wikipedia doesn't make it a wiki-ality.

Now tell me where this "more money in the pockets" to stimulate economic activity is going to come from without manipulating the marketplace?

Clearly the "more money in the pockets" comes from manipulating the marketplace.
But, personally, manipulating the marketplace so that a third home-owner in Aspen has to pay 5% more to get their house cleaned and a maid gets a bigger paycheck is totally fine with me.
All markets are manipulated, because markets do not exist without a framework of law/custom/tradition to contain them. Manipulating markets to ensure greater social equality is an ancient and honorable human tradition as old as history. People long ago figured out that un-manipulated markets tended to develop extreme concentrations of wealth and anti-competitive monopolies.
As Amory Lovins said ""markets are an excellent servant, a bad master, and a worse religion."

ride it...some places need the wage raise some places don't. I can say in Chicago where there are a ton of people and not as many good paying jobs for the uneducated that a raise in the minimum wage will benefit the whole. It hurts the small busines short term, but where the cost of goods is inflated due to the area, major metropolitan, a wage increase is good. Otherwise these people would never get a raise.
