I think the other competitors certainly took notice of what happened to that girl because I saw other folks getting serious slingshot starts and tucking hard down the ramp.
The girls were having a hard time clearing it because of their lack of weight, but with that instance the female snowboarder got bucked in the two extremely abrupt transitions before the kicker. She got thrown by the first aprupt transition to the flat and then a little off balance hit the second transition to the up-slope thereby completely putting here on her ass where she then went sliding off the edge of the jump and into the net.

The jump went 45 degrees to dead flat in a matter of about two to three feet. It was hard for even a guy like me, being tall and strong to absorb the compression. For a girl on a snowboard it seemed downright impossible, i'm suprised one or two cleared it before that lady went into the net.

and as far as kaya goes, I got word not to long ago about her status and I posted this at ns.com

The word is that Kaya has some serious internal injuries including an almost completely torn pancreas and intestinal bruising. They were questioning whether or not to do surgery but as of now it's looking like they're going to let her body heal itself and skip any sort of surgery. (although there is still a slight chance of an operation) The outlook for a full recovery is very positive but in the meantime keep your thoughts and prayers with her and her family.

I always thought a football stadium would be a great venue for something like thatwith cliff gaps where the teirs come down and thne a big kicker and table at the 50 yard line
Its not that I suck at spelling, its that I just don't care

Since the event was sponsored by an insurance company I'm guessing the liability release is iron clad.

So will you be hitting it next year knowing how horribly designed it is, Alka?

I was kinda sketched out even watching the event...I just felt like any moment someone would get hurt. How difficult can it be to have smooth transitions on the in-run? Did the designer thing "oh, we can just have 30 degree angles in there, the snow will even it out"?

It's a shame that something with the potential of being so awesome was so poorly planned and designed. I also thought it was odd that they were making the athletes climb up 100 feet of scaffolding stairs to get to the top, wouldn't it be better to keep them from hiking up metal stairs in ski boots? In construction projects they have elevators, why not for this?

On a positive note, I still had a great time there, and props to the skiers for sending it...totally ballsy...

I'm glad Moseley hit the jump, maybe if he was sketched out by it he'll make sure it's constructed better next year...get a designer who can factor in snow speed, transition angles, etc. Maybe have two ramps (one for lighter athletes...smaller gap) similar to Danny Way's skateboard big air comps.

I'd love to see this be an annual event...just make it safe!

Fwiw: Turxski went biggest of all the women. She took it pretty far down the slope and tried to save the landing then veered off course.

Wait, Kaya = the female 1/2 of Turkski??? Oh fuck! ++vibes++

As for Icer Air, it was just ok in my book. It was cool to see some snow in SOMA and to see like minded people get stoked about the up coming season, but other than that, the event was pretty weak. The jump was super sketchy....I can't believe they were going to hold that without a net! It was sure death if someone fell through that gap. Also, IMHO, I thought the event was poorly planned in regards to time management. It seemed like there was a ton of waiting to see someone actually jump. J5 was cool. The announcers SUCKED, and the fact that they shut off beer sales, forcing people to buy Sparks around the main event time was weak.

The athletes, when it was finally time, were really good. It just seemed like all day before we finally saw some action. Other sick skiers like CR Johnson and Ingrid Backstrom were there signing posters, etc which was cool, but overall, I was kind of dissapointed.

Was cool hanging out with the 666 clan though. Always a good time.

edit: Snowtigress, you were there? I thought I saw you but wasn't sure if it was you. I think it was you walking up from the field in the lower seats section by the sound stage. I was sitting in the seats with my brother there just before J5 started. I think you were looking at me also.

The event was definitly fun. My main complaint was they said they were 'out' of beer and were only selling $6 Sparks. So brutal. That shit is horrible.

J5 was pretty cool as was seeing tony hawk. There is also something novel about standing at home plate and looking up at a giant ski jump.

Question Icer Air 2006 Jump Designer?

Does anyone know who the Icer Air 2006 jump designer was?

Was it the Northstar guy Chris Gunnarson from Snow Park Technologies who has done the Winter X games for the last 10 years?

Or Jerimiah Pebley from Snow Park Technologies?

Or was it someone who designed the one of these jumps:

    * Freestyle.ch jump www.freestyle.ch (28 meters high) held in September at the Landiwiese park in Zurich, Swtizerland

    * Air & Style www.air-style.com jump (35 meters high with 7 meter gap - shape designed by pro-riders David Benedek and Sani Alibabic) held in December at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany

    * X-Trail Jam www.x-trailjam.net jump (38 meters high) held in December at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan

I don't know any of the facts but I have a hard time believing gunny or Pebley would design a jump that would put athletes at such risk. Those guys job is to give athletes the safest possible tools to progress on.
I don't see how as a skier or rider you could make something to blatantly stupid and allow people to hit it. The lack of a net is unfathomable to me.
