Is it typical to sign a waiver for soft ski bags?

These MoFo's gonna be chuckin $hit or what?

Got any packing hints.

1 skibag and boots count as only 1 checked item. However, I was planning on carrying on boots and a backpack w/gear. Nope you can only carry on one. (@#$%&&

Norhtwest does ask that you sign a waiver on the skis occasionally, as does America West. Those are the only two I know that do it. Both times my skis were being chucked by the staff within 10 seconds of the release. Bastards.

Baggage restrictions are different for every airline. Some do not let you throw clothing etc. in with the skis (to protect them). Your "bag" is the "equipment only". In the same "equpiment only" situation, your boots in a bag count on the same. Nothing in addiotion to the boots may be packed. I had this experience with American.

Other airlines allow clothes to be packed with the skis within reason for one of your checked bags. United is this way.

Always check on-line with the airline's policy. They may or may not enforce it to the letter when you check in, but it's nice to know what you're up against.

Ski bag and boot bag count for one item. I was kind of bent when I wrote this and not thinkin. I am gonna carry on the boots w/one days ski clothes and pack the backpack in the suitcase.

i second that motion to wear the boots onto the plane. these airline folks wanna get nuts?? THEN LET'S GET NUTS!!!

a pair of sandals or sneakers would fit much more easily into your carry-on bag. just don't carry fingernail clippers or a pen-knife, because they will confiscate.

I've been through this crap with airlines a couple times. But the carry-on boots and some other necessities was the inspiartion behind the Transpac bootbag, which carries boots and has a pocket between the boots for other carry-on essentials and is sized to the max for a carry-on. Unfortunately, it will only count as one item if it is checked with the ski bag. And that blows.

Anybody use the sportube hard case? I looked at them and decided to go with a padded 2-pair wheeled bag instead. I like the idea of the hard case, but it didn't seem to have a good retention system inside.

On the whole airlines baggage policies are inconsistent. I've found early morning/redeye flights to be much more lax regarding baggage policies. (I've not had to pay tho check my 9'6" longboard on morning flights!). Service also seems to be quicker, and baggage damage reduced.

I'd say it's a safe bet that the baggage handlers are going to chuck anything they can get their hands on, so pack accordingly.

For airlines' exact requirements for carry-ons and checked baggage go to their website and search for "contract of carriage."

You might ask if you can pack clothes around your skis. If they say yes, then pack that thing like an overstuffed sausage, and pack your boots in the regular suitcase. Worked just fine for me on Air New Zealand. Baggage handlers have a hard time abusing a 2 meter long, 32 kg ski bag.

Not to get too far off this topic, but does anyone know if there are ski bags available that can carry a couple of pairs of skis AND a (Bindingless) snowboard? something padded and with wheels would be good.

I've had a soft ski bag for years and never had any problem with damage. You beat on your skis harder at the hill?!

Patagucci had one called the "Taco" bag. Don't know how much it cost, but probably plenty.

edit: maybe they don't make it anymore, it's not on their site.

Most airline will allow you one carry on and one personal item, purse, laptop or breifcase.

Don't put your boots in a bag and call it your personal item.

They haven't made it for a couple of years now. OUtlets don't have it, and the occaisonal used one that appears on eBay goes for $200+

if you have a pack that has some kind of external strap system, lash your boots to your carry on kind of like you would strap your skis to the side of a pack. turn the boot upside down and slide the upper cuff thru the loop and tighten, viola 1 piece of luggage.

Geoff (and others), don't forget your ski equipment quota for your one check bag can only be one pair of skis. I'm pretty sure it's this way for every airline. I had this issue arise when I was taking the fats and the jibs in my double bag. It's like $25-$50 additional for the "oversized" bag.

I use a SportTube that holds two pair of skis OR one pair plus lots of wadded up ski clothes!!!

It works great and I've managed to get a pair of XXX's and a pair of Gotamas in it. Also done XXX's with G4's and other combo's, so the SportTube is plenty large for most stuff and I've never had any damage. I will NEVER use a ski bag - seen too many broken bindngs as a result.
