trusting shops with your precious boards

So I'm sitting in my schools library in London wishing I was back home in Colorado... only four more weeks.

While I'm gone however, I need my rents to mount my boards. I've always gone to the same shop. I know some of the workers and trust their work. Taking my skis to this shop is extensively out of the way. So I found a small shop near them and I called the store up and the guy says they have pleny experience mounting my set-up (Gotamas w/ Freerides), but he also scared me a bit when he said they dont have or just dont use (I can't remember) a jig. Now part of me thinks that because they do it by hand they will do a good job. Another part of me thinks there is more room for error.

Am I wrong? Should I trust this shop?

I would do it myself when I got back but with flights and other circumstances it would force me to sacrifice 5 solid days on these boards.

Where in CO? We have a pretty good idea of good shops around here...there's plenty of us CO folks...

EDIT: or rather, where are the parents and the boards, exactly? (Maybe not CO?) And what shop are you considering? Pretty good chances someone here can give you the thumbs up/down if you give us more detail...

There's a guy here who springs to mind who is from CO but lives in OH...

Perhaps you could ask him to shepard your boards and check on the shop before handing them over, in return for some beers over the holidays when he and you are both back in CO...

You might try PMing him - Cornholio

There are also plenty of other people originally from OH-IO here...now that you've coughed up some legitamately useful info , perhaps they can chime in.

That said, there are plenty of shops that do a fine job doing the Fritschis by hand with the paper jigs that come with the bindings (measure thrice, cut once), and if these guys have done many of these same mounts before...you're prrrrrrobably fine.

Oh and finally, since it looks like the shop is outside of Columbus (another nice tidbit I shouldn't have to have looked up myself )...and Conrholio is in Cleveland... I have a buddy who is a pretty serious rider (slowboarder) who is originally from Columbus, who just happens to be headed back there from CO next week, for just a few days.

As it turns out, this guy is coming up short on $$ for his season's pass...

Perhaps he could be "convinced" to pick up your boards and binders and bring them back here, at which point I can bring them to a good shop of your (or my) choice, or bring them to Marshal, who could do the mount for you for beer. You could then pick them up from one of us whenever you get back.

    Ball is in your court...

or just have them ship them to me (less than a mount prolly) and i'll mount them up and have 'em ready when you get back to CO. and you can just buy me a beer or two at the bar.

I apologize for the lack of information... should have been more clear as there should be no need for someone to do background info to post.

ANYWAYs... I still have 4 weeks here and I'll prolly decide soon, but...

    The traveling circumstances are thus:
I fly to Ohio from London (getting in at 5 PM) and leave the next day at 6 AM getting into BOZEMAN at 1 PM.

I normally get my boards done at Mtn. Chalet in the Springs or at the Ski Shop. While I will definitely be making it back to Colorado I am first stopping in Big Sky to ski with some friends and other fam who go to Northwestern and are skiing there for their ski trip (free place to stay and cheap lift tickets... why not, right)

The dilemma was more along the lines of whether I should trust a shop I've never been too. I think it is all coming down to whether I really want to use those skis then. (Thats why I would sacrifice 5 days - waiting til I got back to mount them)

Thanks a bunch for the input... and I really appreciate the offers

    Sorry I'm and asshole

no worries, just trying to hook you up.

but honestly, fritschi mounts are easy, as long as you know what you are doing...

What shop in Ohio are you looking at? I've dealt with most shops in the area and may be able to get you a little more info with the name and location of the shop.
I think that the human mind is unique among all other forms of life in that it can spontaneously create unique thoughts and provide unique behaviors. Instead of rewarding that uniqueness we, for some reason probably because of cultural and social necessity, we chastise unique behavior and reward conformity.

how many got/freeride mounts can a shop in OH reasonably be expected to have done?

Overlooked that somehow....gotta remember to have coffee before attempting to post so early.

I don't have any experience with them, but I'd be skeptical of any shop in Ohio doing a freehand mount, especially if it would only set me back 5 days to have a trusted shop mount them. I've had shops around here look at me like I'm crazy when I bring in my Mantras, I can't imagine handing over a pair of Goats and trusting them to get it right.

    Edit: Exactly LB!

Have your parents ship those bitches to my man Donnie. He manages a shop right in Big Sky. He can get them mounted up and they will be waiting for you when you get there.

yeah... thanks for the offer i really appreciate it

i just talked to a kid i know that goes to ohio state university and he said that the shop sells gotamas and freerides so they have at least some idea of what theyre doing

plus he talked to the owner who does a lot of the mounts and said the store is pretty chill... the owner apparently skis a-basin all the time... which makes me worry a tad bit less...

    i should be alright

agreed here. you could easily do a fritschi mount yourself if you are careful with your measurements. that's really the hardest part.
