Talking Berthoud Dawn Patrol - 10-26-06

Just got back from a dawn patrol with my co-worker Lacy.

There was 2ft of powder on Berthoud. The stuff was so deep you could not get going on the low angle stuff. It was also a little bit on the heavy side, but still alright.

I got quite a few face shots this morning.
We left at 9:30 and it was still dumping.

The driving was a bitch. I-70 was shut down on the way back at Floyd Hill. A big rig was all across I-70. We made it back on US-6. So... for all who want to go up to the mountains... I think the only way right now is US-6.

Now..... back to work with a big grin in my face.

    Later,
    Oliver

Son of a bitch! I was headed up to Loveland this morning and had to turn around because of a rock slide just West of Georgetown.

Same thing happened to D-side and I. It's damn hard getting work done knowing a select few a-holes are tearing all that shit up right now. Oh well, there should still be some goods left for tomorrow...

Also, IridePow, this thread is worthless without pics yo!

Pics wouldn't show anything since it was snowing so hard. All you would see is white. I couldn't even tell where I was going between the face shots and falling snow.

Any word on the snow quality, consistancy? What's the snow pack looking like now?

Edit: Thanks for pics. Looks like it really sucked!

That doesn't look like any fun at all. I am glad I went to the doctor's office then work this morning. Really.

Nice to see you over here anyway, Lacy.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

I heard it's wet and heavy, even up high.

Update: lemonboy just called from Sol Vista and said it's 3%, 39.5" of fresh, and still dumping.

As iskibc already mentioned it's quite heavy. However when we left around 9:30 it seemed to come down somewhat fluffier.

The berthoud snowpack looks about like this:
They got about 10" Wednesday Oct 18
    another 12" - 18" on Friday night Oct 20
those two layers settled quite a bit in the last few warmer days.
Plus around 2ft in this storm

A guy who came from Winterpark mentioned that he saw some natural slab releases on the north facing stuff.
You definitely have to be careful in the next few days after all this snow.
