Bahhh I'm too caught up in some deep sci-fi: "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons. I like this book club concept tho. You seem to be fond of the name Court*n*y lately.

are we going to meet in person to talk about this tome or are we going to do this all cyberly, which I'm not into. the whole beauty of the book club is getting together, preferably a place like chumley's to discuss. is everyone NYC?

Edit: ok, I guess we're cyber. I'm still into it.

Absolute, hands down, best story I have read...ever! In fact, those four books kind of ruined me on other sci fi. Nothing else even comes close. Good choice.

Edit: OK, I'm in with The Power of One.

Yup - it's the Thursday following Turkeyday.

I like the chat idea - previously we tried critique threads, something more active might work. Say 7pm PST 11/30/06 ?

Okay I'm going to the library to look for it.

They only bomb the big fancy downtown library. I'm just walking over to the Sandy one.

    meh...

Herbert and Clark are both big idea guys, and they excel at that. But I always thought their charachter development was a little lacking, although if I had to choose, I think Herbert was better at it than Clark.

Have you ever tried Gene Wolfe? The Book of the New Sun is pretty much the pinnacle of modern science fiction. I did like hyperion/endymion a lot, but Wolfe is a superior author.

No, I haven't. But I'll take a look at him.

For several years I only read a handful of authors(Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, Larry Niven, David Brin, C. S. Friedman, with a little Robert Heinlein thrown in for good measure, then Simmons.)

It would be good to pick up a new author(right after I finish The Power Of One. )

    Thanks for the recommendation.

When is our "meeting?" Wednesday the 29th? (I don't know why that date sticks in my head, I think that's what we picked in chat last time?)

i'm #1 on the waiting list on my library, and whoever has it now is a week past his due date. his 70 cent fine translates into me not making a wednesday meeting.
