RIP Caleb - My deepest condolences to your family, to you Skipig and your friends.

It is heartbreaking to watch young people die.

My friend in college got in a huge avalanche in the St Lawrence area skiers left of where they were skiing. For some reason, his life was saved when he got hung up on a tree that broke his femur but pulled him out of the slide. I don't know why some people get a pardon and others don't. Those are dangerous slopes back there. One thing we all should remember is that unusual weather conditions create unusual avalanche conditions. I will be thinking of you and your family and friends.

Caleb Acker. Good snowboarder and one of my best friends.
So sorry about this, such an unlucky tragedy. Seemed like things were calming down, I can't say I wouldn't have been out there hunting pow on the fringes yesterday. Really sad news, condolences to friends and family of Caleb. Unbelieveable how much terrain gets skied on much sketchier days and now this. A shocking reminder of what "moderate" can mean.

So sorry for all who knew him and vibes to all affected. Sounds like it was just a small windloaded area that covered him. take care out there y'all.

yep. here's what they had on GNFAC today, more coming once they check it out.

    Snowpack and Avalanche Discussion:
The Bridger Range, The Madison and Gallatin Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, the mountains around Cooke City and the Washburn Range:

I am sad to report that a 22 year old male snowboarder died in an avalanche yesterday. He and his partner ascended Truman Gulch on the west side of the Bridger Range (picture). They stopped about 200 feet from the ridgetop, dug two snowpits and decided to stay on the northern edge of the large avalanche path at the head of the drainage since this side was not wind-loaded. The partner descended first. The victim came second and skied toward an adjacent gully to the north where he triggered a hard wind slab. The avalanche reportedly broke 2-3 feet deep, 40-50 feet wide and ran at least 700 feet down the steep gulley. The victim was located and probed by his partner. Bridger Bowl Ski Patrol assisted digging him out, but he did not survive. We will be investigating the avalanche site today and post a detailed accident investigation later in the week.

Sorry to hear about the Truman Gulch avy and wish the best for Caleb's family and friends. Spent the last couple of days meadow skipping out North a ways...hard to believe but there was still some dry, non wind scoured pow to be had given the temps in the 40's and the nuclear winds lately. Heard the lifts shut down in the afternoon and saw the wind sensor picked up a 66 mph gust on Bridger at 1 pm....yikes! No wind at all a little ways North.

Shitty news man, I feel worse the more I learn about the incident. Seems like they were doing things right for the most part.

Hafta go rip one for Caleb, fellas... nice little 8" refresher this morning.

I think at some point as many of us as possible should get together and drink a few for the unfortunate ones this year. I can't think of just moving on and forgetting about the deaths in the community this year. Neither were close to me personally, but I feel like paying some respect to those who died doing what we do, hunting for the last scraps of pow, driving Bridger Canyon everyday. Both cases could have been any one of us and I feel like a gathering of the like minded Bridger Folk on here to celebrate what's so easy to take for granted, in memory of the fallen, wouldn't be a bad idea.

No freeride, but I am down for some beers. As long as MT doesn't show up.

Looks like we could be in for a little snow tomorrow, so that means you all are gonna have to go huge in the freeride. Good luck.

TC - solid idea. I'd definitely be down to grab a beer at some point with ya fellas.

Haven't been on skis for some weeks now, but I'm gonna try to muster up the troops on my end, park ourselves in the viewing area, and cheer on the chargers tomorrow for the freeride. Go get 'em guys!

I'll be making my first trip to BB next week (2/24-2/28), to visit a childhood buddy whom I haven't seen in FAR too long. He rides with a big white cross on his back, so I'm unsure how many runs I'll actually get to ride with him (many, I hope).
Also might hop over to BS/MLB for a day, depending on conditions.

I wouldn't mind hooking up with some BB peeps; if anybody's interested in showing an FNG around a bit, PM please...first round's on me, of course.
Awful news about young Mr. Acker, condolences to his family & friends. I'll certainly be making turns in his honor. I'm not sure if buddy was involved in the recovery operation. Please please please watch your step out there, folks.

Looks like some precip might be on the way. Time to get the snowdance on.
    Cannot wait...

very tragic about caleb, thoughts/prayers/vibes to his family who lost a son way too soon and to the lives he touched like yours skipig...
scary and sobering in both the carwreck and slide as we wait for names thinkin it could be any number of our friends- in the case of the slide I know so many guys who regularly yo-yo laps back there tickling the dragons and Ive heard of several close calls over the yrs- that they skinned up and dug pits makes it even more sad as they tried to do everything right...
in the case of the wreck my wife was in on the grim scene of the response...life=precious and tenuous
def. down to gather sometime & tip a few...

aloha from hawaii, skiin here sux, glad bb got somethin hope it keeps up tho the wind could take a break...

Same here. I just can't tell if I would be able to even ski down from Alpine right now. I would really love to watch the freeride, do they rent snowblades at the hill? Maybe that would be a safer option for me?

Maybe show up at ski patrol HQ w/ 6+ growlers of Bozone Amber and beg for a ride to the top???

I haven't checked in at Gimp Central for a while Tone, but what's your status? Considering your injury report, did you end up getting cut open? Or just PT?

Got the order about my knee last week from the doc that a few more weeks of no skiing along w/ PT was on tap. He did say though I've got a sloppy meniscus that's gonna need it's third surgery at some point in the next few years though.

Good luck to any mags ridin' tomorrow!

All right fine, I'll stay home. I was serious about snowblades though, I figure maybe less leverage on the blown knee, get out and party at the hill. I guess I could just use a saucer and a bottle of Jack though. Sounds shitty about the meniscus issue dude, I hope I don't have that going on too. I get carved up March 2nd. Hope to meet up with some of you and have some drinks before then, can't wait to see any freeride footage so post it up.

Wow, a good reminder that all those flat landings in Bridger Gully are way sweeter on a pow day. Ouch. Some sick stompage in there for sure though.
