Moving to Denver metro... few general questions

Hey Maggots, newbie here. I've lurked around here for a while but this is my first post. My wife and I are planning to move to the Denver area around the first of December. We're both late 20's and have no kids. I'm tired of the east coast beach area life. I've been here in Hampton Roads for 10 years now while serving in the Navy and I'm ready to go. I've been out to CO five times I guess in the last two winters for ski trips. I've made a few friends out there, so we'll at least know a couple of people when we move.

I know there are a number of people here from the Denver area so I thought I'd ask a few questions. I'm currently working for Raytheon on a wide-area surveillance radar and recently finished 10yrs active duty Navy service as an electronics technician. I'll be sending resumes, etc. before we make the move, but I'm not counting on having a job lined up before we move. I would really like to get into the home theater, a/v line of work. As an installer to start with since I don't have any industry experience. It's a hobby of mine and have put together my own systems and helped friends with theirs. Does anyone happen to know anyone in the industry in the Denver area? Anyone else with the same interest here that can pass along some company names in the area?

If that doesn't work out I will most likely stay in the electronics field. I don't think I'll have too much of a problem finding work in the field once I get out there. I sent resumes and applied to lots of places earlier this year before I released from active duty, but got no feedback. I feel that it was mainly due to me not being local to the area. I hope once I get there things will be different.

Also, we'll be looking for an apartment instead of jumping in and buying another home. I know that most apartments require verification of income before leasing a place. How does one make a move to a new area with the intentions of finding work once there and trying to find a place to live? lol

I guess that's about it. I'm just bored here at work and thought I'd throw out some questions and see if I can make a few connections with some more Denver locals before we head that way. Thanks.

    Mike

A lot of times if you can show bank slips that show that you have a fair amount of money in your bank account they'll use that instead of verification of income.

fyi as a radar electronics technician there would be a lot of jobs open to you with good pay unless you're just tired of that industry.
companies to look at are coherent technologies in lousiville, lockheed, raytheon, adam aircraft, and ball aerospace in boulder to name a few.

The springs has a good bit of work down there as well.

as for the a/v industry, cant help you as I just do it myself if I need anything done.

Well let's see....Denver has Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Ultimate Electronics. Hopefully that helps.

This place doesn't seem to suck as bad...

    http://www.listenup.com/

They carry Dynaudio, B&W and NHT, so it's at least relatively high end.

Pechelman has some very good suggestions. I would also check with Harris, BAE Systems, Boeing, and Dyncorp. Lot's of aerospace in the area with the USAF presence, as mentioned definitely check CO Springs. Your military security clearance, active or not, is like gold right now with the current federal backlog that's going on.

Please call on some of the local prayer partners in Denver. They can tell you the easiest way to contribute to the Thomas Road Baptist Church, which I am sure is high on your list of priorities.

Remember, its expensive to fight the forces of godless liberalism and God hates cheapskates.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I know all of the big defense contractors are out there, etc. I'll definitely be keeping the option of CO Springs open as well. I've stayed active reserve, so my clearance is active so I know that will help if I stay in that arena.

Thanks, we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the info guys. Our house is under contract now, so we're pretty much official. We'll be out there the first week of Jan, so I'm pretty stoked. I've been introduced to an employee at ListenUp now, so that's good. Can't wait to get out there and settled in so I can get to skiing! Any other advice, feel free to post. Thanks.
