    Dumping in Utah: Henry Mntns

    From http://www.weather.gov/alerts/ut.htm...CWSWSLC.035800

A HEAVY SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MDT WEDNESDAY.
THIS HEAVY SNOW WARNING IS FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF CENTRAL AND
SOUTHWEST UTAH...AS WELL AS THE HENRY MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHERN UTAH.
14 TO 20 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED BY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT...WITH
    LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE.

Sounds like Central Utah will be getting more snow than the Northern ranges to start the year. If it were to continue snowing or deliver in a big way, I am thinking about cruising down there this weekend to check out ski possibilities. Does anyone have beta on good access for the Henry (or La Sal) Mountains?

Getting to the Henry Mountains. Be sure to post beta later. I'm thinking that range is on my tick list this winter.

On our trip to Lake Powell this year, we drove right by them. I was gawking the entire time. I'm thinking a south to north traverse over two days, with plenty of turns in between.

If the roads are heinous, we could rent an ATV.

    Let's do it.

    West side of Henry's.

if you go..plan on spending an extra couple of days out there in case you get stuck. Once precip falls, the roads become so slick you cant go anywhere with anything! trust me...it sucks.
There's a world out there full of color, dreams, and imagination. What are you waiting for?

I was there for some summer hiking 5 or 6 years ago. We were in a two wheel drive car and didn't have any trouble even though we had read 4 wheel drive only. I think we got lucky that it didn't rain. It seems like someone told me that Garfield Co. grades one of the roads every year, can't remember which one.

yeah the roads are graded but Stoysluttie has it right, once those roads get wet they turn into a slick muck worse than anything you've driven on.

Depending on dates, I might be interested in "documenting" this stupid idea.

I've driven 'ice mud' in the Bridgers of Montana. Slicker than a wet hogs back at butcher time.

What's the best month? Late April?

Stoy, have you actually skied down there? I remember you talking about it, but can't remember if you got up in there or not.

I spent a weekend in the Henry Mtns several years ago, during the summer. Nice scenery, no crowds (no people other than us). There are 4x4 and graded dirt roads throughout, but it is remote -- if you get stuck or break down, you're on your own out there. Bring 2 vehicles if breakage is likely.

Drove through the area last weekend. There was already some coverage on the peaks. I think this storm and another and it should be good to go.

I haven't been up on the mountain for several years...but I can tell you the notom road will be quite difficult to pass when wet, or if it has rained recently. I have driven it many times top to bottom when wet and it is something that is best done with a truck. My subaru impreza RS didn't enjoy it much, even with snow tires. The road base is some sort of clay? and will jam up your wheel wells very quickly if your not using a high clearance vehicle.

That being said...my dad has skiied the range several times and he is not too much of a hard ass. I'd be interested in trying. It looks like fun, and I love the area.

I have a friend from Monticello who used to tell me that the Henry Mountains were a fucked up, haunted place. He and his dad, he told me, used to frequent the mountains as a hunting area but something bad roams in the hills. He was authentically frightened and refused to tell me more.

Ditto from a cousin from Blanding -- basically the same description, "fucked up, haunted place".

How I missed that little gem is beyond me. Nice read indeed.

Other than just wanting outsiders to say out of their private playground (I'm sure the hunting is great), I wonder why they say that? Broken axles? Bears stealing their food?

I'd think Talking Mtn. Cirque is more fucked up and haunted:
