Lynx's full-length report on today's (wed) Bird Comp

got up there around 8:15. had to call my new boss over at brighton @ 8:45, before i could get on the tram, to verify whether or not i needed to go into work today. he says go watch the comp. Cool.

i gear up and board the tram with a couple girls who were in the comp. one was running today, and the other was 6th in the prequalifiers so she was unfortunatly cut for weather. she offered to help me figure out where to shoot from up there though.

so i set up skier's right because i was told if i went skiers left i'd probly get cliffed out and have to huck my arse to get down. i missed the first couple girls, but saw the rest. most were taking a line down the middle which was out of my view, plus there was the poor visibility. Jamie Burge came skier's right, went down, and suddenly she kind of stopped and fell over. DNF. word on the street is she blew out her knee. not cool.

some guys started lining up while the girls where finishing. Johnny Law and Manut Gaidet were set up for a line right past me. the visibility out there created a time lag between each competitor as the judges waited for the clouds to clear just enough to see the top. I would keep and eye on the finish area, and when i could finally see it again, i would stand up and get ready for the next guy to run.

the girls finished and they started running the guys (with the visibility hold between each guy). i was getting super cold but trying to move around and keep warm. I decided i would wait for johnny to go, since he would be skiing a line near me, and then head down. i saw manut gaidet set up at the same place so i decided i would wait for him too, but it just seemed hopeless. I figured at the very least, murphy's law would kick in and the clouds would clear right after i packed up my camera and at least the guys could run. so i packed up, flipped myself around and ducked the rope out of the competition area and headed down to the finish area.

apparently, johnny was getting a re-run cause the clouds moved back in too soon during his run. it took so long for another window of opportunity that he had skiied down and taken the tram back up before anyone else had gone. he got his second run in, and then gaidet went, and he was the last one that ended up running all day.

i ran into Ingrid first thing as i was kicking off my skis when i got down to the finish area which was awesome cause i haven't seen her since i left CA. I waited around the finish area for a while in the hopes that the clouds would lift. then a friend of my came up and asked if i would take a run with her. I ran into MD9 while i was walking back to get my skis which was cool, but i felt bad cause i couldn't hangout or talk long, though it seems our paths kept crossing the rest of the day anyway. took the run w/ my friend and then decided to take a trip "Around the world" instead of standing on the tram. so i went up gadzoom and little cloud and took a run. The i headed to the tram and ran into moles. so we got in line to go back up. then it turns out we were right behind MD9 and Slip who i just met for the first time. woo!

the guys checked in at the top of silverfox to hear the obvious, that the comp had been called. i took another run down and headed quick for the facilities. and when i came back out, who do i run into but KD! excellent. he introduced me to a couple people and we all headed to the keyhole for some eats.

when we left the keyhole, i had to go back into the competitor's room to get my skis and I caught Swany talking about what was going on with the comp and the weather and everything.

so as i've mentioned briefly in other threads....the 6 guy's scores from today will be scrapped and they guys will all run tomorrow on silverfox. the girls will then take a second run on silverfox. on friday, the girls and the guys will all run on baldy. Swany mentioned the area they were suppose to hold the final day and said they have been working with snowbird, and snowbird really wanted to let them up there to this area that has been closed for so long, just for the comp, and the heli was set to transport everyone, but due to the weather conditions it will have to wait another year.

    the end.

if you read all this, you are a saint.

edit: P.S. i will post the women's results, unless someone else beats me to it, after i shower and get back out to my car to retrieve them.

Two of my girls killing it. Way to go Ingrid and Anik.
Serious bummer about Jamie, I guess no more dancing with Jamie all night at the Red Dog.
