thats weird, cause the one I flexed at the store felt like the core was plastic.
super super soft, especially the tail.

Good looking construction, too much taper (sidecut). If I had to guess I'd say it'll ski short and turny...

The ski has a wood core, softer than the new BD which is foam.

Makes sense that it's like the ANT, I'm pretty sure the first gen ANTs came from the Atomic factory, aparently not tweaked enough to anthony boronowski input, thus ending up with an atomic like flex...?

    How it skis...no fucking clue.

Smally (NZ) rides on them, and he seems to like them. That's all I can add to this thread.

I'd think the search feature would dig up something. Anyhow, whether or not they're worth it will fully depend on what you want, who you are, what you ride etc.

I can easily see why some would love them; but they weren't for me. Sure, thay were great at some things (like supertight trees/commandostyle trashing around/steep-technical -stuff-in-deep-snow etc., but on the other hand the new 07 BD does all of that even better for me.

So again, what do you want it for?

strange they would make this ski and then also make the BD to be so similar.. u like the BD more telepath?

I ride mostly steeper runs and whereever I can find deep powder. I am planning to do some BC and heli and touring this year and I want a ski which will rip for that and also function and rip (somewhat) in the resort. My concern is that back in resorty type runs I am gonna hate 'em.. just as long as they can hold an edge on a groomed slope, I think i will really like em, otherwise I will be worried i spent 700$ on em.

anyone know what they turn like?

smally? viscous? anyone who has skiied the ski who can chime in?

It sounds like you will be happier with the new BD...The thug is pretty soft, and much different in construction from the BD. The BD is a foam core, with beta construction, ect, where the thug is just a wood core ski (just a wood core! I only own wood cores!) which is relatively soft. It will work great for powder, but crud, high speed maneuverability, and hard pack...it sounds like it could be a nightmare. The BD conquerors all of these areas, even if the flex is significantly softer from the older generation BD's. The new BD has a tapered tail which apparently works wonders in the powder, reducing the amount the tails can catch, increasing ease in turning, and allowing you to butter or slide (proper terminology?) which in motion.

The thug has got to be a thug in the deepest of snow...but everywhere else it seems to lack the components that give it versatility. Consider the BD, or many other lines of skis...depending on your skiing style, ie, level of aggressiveness, speeds desired, sanity, ect ect

Perhaps they are trying to market the Atomic Freestyle line to a "younger" demograophic? Also, I think the BD is not a twin, yet the Thug is. Something like the way K2 had the Chief and the Seth...

Just ordered mine yeterday. I am looking forward to seeing how they ski. Pretty excited to see Atomic making a wood core/vertical sidewall ski again. I agree that it seems that they have a fair amount of sidecut for such a big ski. I beleive Vicious said that they were a pretty fun ski. I will be curious to see how they ski in comparison to my Big Daddies.

They are not similar, that's the thing. The BD is a ski, the Thug imo is an extremely-deep-snow jib tool or something I think. They're pretty good, it's just that for everything but landing switch the BD (which I like a lot) is just better at it.

Most skis with a 120 waist are bad on proper hardpack no matter what. To me it makes sense to have the best offpiste stick and just learn to deal with it for transports on groomers and stuff. If you ever just go groomer skiing just get some beat-to-shit rental carving ski of whatever brand, it'll be better than any wide ski and cost you a sixpack or something.

A lot. Contrary the BD they're fond of finishing the turns as well dues to the huge tail; if you like that (lots do) it's perfect but if not you won't be able to smear as with the BD.

fyi, the difference in waist between a mantra and the thug is the same as the waist difference between the mantra and a pure carving ski (68 mm).

The mantra is versatile as hell. I use it as an everyday in-bounds ski. Not too stiff, but it holds an edge very well. I take it through bumps, or bump-like conditions, a lot; if you do that, I'd say go with the mantra. If not, get the gotama. With the goat you'll still get plenty of float, but also a lot more versatility in crud/hardpack.

No. It might to some extent depend on what a straightline is to you, but generally: no.

S..t..that makes me think...i was gonna go for 'em but actually i need a stiffer ski that will perform well in every snow conditions..something stiff..like supermojos or bd's...the thing that i don't like is that they're not twin tip so i was thinking about the thug....any suggestions in this case?

Yeah!I tried last year's model and they were super dope...the only thing is that they're sooo expensive here in europe...
I had thought about the thug also because Vicious in his review was saying that the Thugs can be compared to the Ants...
