Blame Rontele for talking me into signing on here. I am the guy who, in summer, skis in my grandmother's hat. Many of you know me by another name on teletips. I'm a geezer with barely a tenuous grasp on my cognitive faculties.

Anyway, here is some Niseko stoke--photos of the geezer by Mikio Abe. Rontele told me if I didn't post stoke, he would send me something for my birthday that he tried to get rid of here and that I am sure I don't need.

Hey JONG, I thought Niseko was only one mountain? That second picture, what's the story with the mountain in the background. It actually looks like some fun touring terrain. Got any info to spill?

i really don't understand why you would want to inhibit your skiing ability by deliberately sabotaging your ski equipement

Iwao-nuppuri. If you look close you can see a skin track up it. The only reason you would ever bother skiing it is it takes you right to Goshiki-Onsen for a bath and a beer.

Uh, yeah, once I adjusted my glasses I could just make out a faint skin track. It actually looks like some fun stuff down towards the right of the picture where the trees reach highest. And anyway, a skin up followed by a pow run down followed by a beer in an onsen sounds pretty good to me right now. Reason I asked is I'm from Oz and all I hear is Niseko's flat and overrun with Aussies bootpacking and there's nothing to keep you occupied. I was interested to see an area that may not get hit so hard and although not steep is also not _completely_ flat. Airfare's cheap to Japan for me so it's on my todo list in the future.

Toby, Hakuba is not flat and gets as much snow as Niseko. Less Aussies too.

Needless to say we will all benefit from telepariah's extensive knowledge of skiing, avalanches, and culture from the 19th c.

When I think of "old telemarkers" I think of bitter people. People who hate snowboarder, people who talked shit about young new eager backcountry skiers, people who talk shit about people who make big high speed turns, people who dont like fat skis, people who dont like heli skiers, people who talk shit about dudes hucking huge air, people in leather boots who make the ugliest double poll planting turns I have ever seen, people in gaters and fanny packs. But I know not all old telemarkers are like that, hopefully you are one of the apparant few whose not all bitter about sharing a little pow. Nice picture, hope you have a great winter.

i can vouch for telepariah as one of the most accepting, stand-up, and knowledgable skiers out there. he is most definitely old-school, but knows more about ski mountaineering, skiing, and avalanche safety than 90% of the board and is eager to teach younger generations (including myself) the wealth of knowledge he has.

plus, he is the kind of guy that you would want to share a beer with.

Thats cool, i was just giving him a little shit as that seems to be the SOP around here. I will admit that I like to talk shit about telers its fun and they do tend to get so riled up. I plan on sharing some of my avalanche expieriences here too, especially geared for the younger guys.

Yeah, I know the scoop. Hakuba's number 1 on my list, but that picture of Niseko surprised me. Niseko would be better for my wife and kids since it's so westernised but I thought I'd be bored. If I could tour off the beaten track a bit, that'd keep me happy. Interesting pic anyway.
