I went to Moochies last night. It was good. I have never had a real philly so can't compare but my buddy and I liked it. I will be going back. I really want to try one with whiz. Maybe if enough people ask they will offer that.

This thread hits close to home. I grew up in Philly and went to school at Utah (and have since made the poor decision to move back to Philly). I too had a 4 year search for a Philly Cheese steak in SLC. What I found was that you can get a cheese steak in SLC but you can not get a Philly Cheese Steak.
A lot of the places in Philly call steaks with provolone, or peppers or that stuff, things like "the Out-of-Towner" or "the Tourist". A true Philly steak is simply a "whiz with" or a whiz without.
I lived in Philly for a while while in school (PAFA), and damn, could I use a real cheese steak right now.
Been in Utah since last July, best authentic cheesesteak (in my humble opinion)can be found at Down Town Philly in South Jordan. Guy has tastycakes on the front counter and he used to have Amoroso's rolls flown in, but the locals didn't like them.
Unlike the owner of Moochie's who refuses to carry cheese whiz (I've asked her several times), this guy has it handy. You can read an article next to the register written by some brillant woman who criticized him for putting cheese whiz on the sandwiches, I think she said it wasn't classy enough and wasn't used on real cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. Sounds like she doesn't go back east too often.
American or whiz is the only way to go!
Just a bump cuz I just had a footlong from Moochies and now I need a nap. Happy belly![]()
"I dont hike.... my legs are too heavy"
There is a new joint over in West Jordan on 4800 West. Have yet to hit it up, but will and report back.
Just read the whole thread as I was eating some french bread pizza... I know, I know... it did have beef, melted cheese, and onions though! And some good crusty bread!
Good damn I love me some cheese steaks! Might have to make a special trip to Philly to get some of that Tony Luke's goodness!
drool
+1 for Downtown Philly Cheesesteaks. I havent been to the location in south jordan but I have been to the one in American Fork WAY too much. Best cheesesteak in Utah as far as I'm concerned.
They have a straight up whiz steak plus lots of more creative options.
Moochies is the best, they have awesome meatball subs too. There is a deli in bountiful that I always go to, they have a pretty good philli too.
there's some place on ~1000 E FUB i've noticed lately, never been in though. says something about philly and cheesesteaks, might be worth a shot.
Hey Prof,
I finally get what you're talking about. You have a 6 page thread about cheesesteaks in SLC on a ski forum. Guess you weren't kidding when you requested that I send one out to you![]()
Squishy bread: if you don't have it, you're fucked.
BTW: Pat's meat is better than Geno's.
Best (I MEAN BEST) cheesesteak I ever had was C&SPizza in Mass (somewhere around Ayer). Ho Boy!!!
Cheese Whiz will ruin a good cheesesteak.
Prov or White American w/ onions.![]()
Since this thread got bumped today. PSA Moochies was closed today. One sign said "Open during remodeling" but that sure wasnt the case today![]()
"I dont hike.... my legs are too heavy"
My first job was at a sandwich shop that did all manner of subs (Dibella's in Cranberry/Seven Fields, PA). Bread was baked fresh every morning, and if I remember correctly, the beef for cheesesteaks was ball tip sirloin. My personal favorite:
Lay down a line of the Italian oil dressing on the grill (had oil, oregano, some other stuff)
Slap the beef on, cover and steam
After a few moments, chop roughly
Add salt, plenty of pepper, maybe some more oil
Sautee some onions and banana peppers on the side, then mix into the beef
Add provolone and swiss cheese, cover and steam
Place on an everything roll (like the bagel: onion, garlic, poppy seeds..) with spicy deli mustard
Haven't been to Philly, but I still haven't had a cheesesteak that stacked up to the ones I made. Went to Moochie's a couple weeks ago, wasn't impressed at all.
Just a quick bump. Had Moochies last night and the remodel they did is awesome and expanded the kitchen a ton. They now even have room for a fryer and have fries and rings, but didnt try them. Knew I was going to be stuffed from sharing a cheesesteak with my wife as well as ordering a Reuben. Have to say the Reuben ROCKED! Hard a real hard time deciding which one to have seconds of, so I continued to eat both. Once again just a PSA that the Reuben at Moochies is awesome, although if you are a traditional Reuben fan you will likely be disappointed that it comes on the same roll as the Cheesesteaks. But for whatever reason it works. Writing this makes me want to go back this afternoon![]()
"I dont hike.... my legs are too heavy"
While in undergrad in Baltimore, we used to drive up to Philly for sandwiches. We used to rotate shops so I forget which one was my favorite. Might have been Jim's. There was a place outside Baltimore called "Captain something's" that didn't make the best cheese steaks, but definitely made the biggest I've ever had. Now I'm in NC and have found several joints that do ok cheese steaks, but they load them up with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, etc. Weird.
Loved Moochies. Never had the Reuben, but can vouch for the cheese steaks and the meatball subs (better than Tony Caputo's IMO).
This is making me hungry.

DP Cheesesteaks. Pretty good...good variety, but i always get a steak with WHIZ!!!!!
Moochies for sure.
Haha, love that this thread lives on.
Prof, you obviously still love Moochies and I still love the Philadelphian (although I admit it's not authentic). Even though I have eaten Philly's in Philly, I am not from there and am no expert. So it doesn't matter as much to me. I just love a good sandwhich. I have heard really great things about Downtown Philly from many including people who transplanted to SLC from Philly. I'd be interested in your review of the joint. I don't remember you having tried them in this thread. Word is that they import their ingredients from Philly for authenticity.
There is actually some info on the Philadelphian starting on page one which is now over 4 years old. My concensus on the Philadelphian is order the thing with 3 or 4 meats, lots of cheese and mushrooms. For the life of me I cant remember what it is called. But it was my favorite sandwich in the Sandy area when I worked near 7th East and 9400 South way back in the olden days
Good thing I had some awesome pizza for lunch, or I would be getting really hungry.![]()
"I dont hike.... my legs are too heavy"
No no, I know you've tried and reviewed the Philadelphian. The sandwhich you refer to is the "hot combo".
I love that joint; but, I'm now asking if you've tried a newer place called Downtown Philly. I'm pretty sure it is newer than the start of this thread and therefore may not have been part of your initital SLC cheesesteak search. Have you heard of Downtown Philly?
