Like I said, major dive; but, people who know the place will attest to its goodness. Give it a shot and report back.

Another vote for the Philadelphian. Although I am a SLC native and don't know any better....
Me and my dad would go to the Philadelphian every Sunday for lunch while I was in high school. Everything I've ever had there is good and greasy. Their fries are the shizzle!

I guess the only thing better than a good cheesesteak would be a good cheesesteak and BEER! Lets maybe plan it after turkey day!

As for "Cuzunik".....thanks for the help. Sure glad it helped me a ton here in SALT LAKE CITY Which was the whole point of this thread

confirmed - Kyle's is now Maurice's. So I went over there and ordered the "works" cheesesteak just to contrast and compare.
Conclusion - it's not the same and not nearly as good as Kyle's. But the gal running the place is very nice. And yes, very good fries... but now my gut hurts.

Okay, in the search for the holy grail.... I mean a good cheesesteak in Salt Lake, I finally made it to Moochies. Now remember that "Moochies" and "Muccis" are two totally different places ("Muccis" is formally known as Mesamucci's" I believe). However, "Moochies" makes a "real nice" cheesesteak. By far the best I have had in Salt Lake. Not quite to the level of Philly itself, but very satisfying. After the numerous recent disappointments in this department, it was nice to finally find a good place to satisfy my craving. Plus it was super messy, huge and now I am having a hard time breathing and my heart is beginning to clog...... All signs that the cheesesteak was made properly. Two thumbs up for Moochies. Next step is to see if the Philadelphian can top it and whether Kyles new digs at Piper Down is the end all beat all.

Sorry, my bad. I should have posted about Kyle's move. I heard about it but wasn't sure when it was happening.

This thread has made me hungry since it started. So, I have been averaging three lunch visits a week over the last month to the Philadelphian. Three a week might not sound bad unless you consider the fact that although I live in Sandy, close to the Philadelphian, I work 25+miles away in N.S.L. And remember, try the chips instead of fries... they're delish.

Go try Moochies it is closer to your work and I would like some other people to give their reviews. As for the Philadelphian, are the chips made in house? If so I think I might have to head there this afternoon. On the chip note, anybody else tried the blue cheese/buffalo chips at "Harry's" in Sugarhouse? .......Now I am just making myself hungry.

I'm generally a Moochie's fan. The subs rate highly on the cheesy/greasy factors, but I'm really not into their bread - too close to stale, not chewy enough. I've been trying to get to the Philadelphian, but the wife keeps shootin me down, saying something about cholesterol and heart disease.

I really liked the bread at Moochies. It was nice and chewy yesterday even when the grease and cheese had soaked in. As for the "colestrol" thing and heart disease..... ya whatever......... that is just an old wives tale

I believe today is "Cheesesteak Failure, Part Deux". After my success with Moochies, I finally dragged my ass to Sandy and tried the Philadelphian. I used to eat there all the time when I lived and worked in that area, but I hadnt been to the Philadelphian since 1995 or so and had never tried their cheesesteak. For the record, the place looks just the same as 10 years ago. The people were nice as always, but I think they were a little slammed, so it took a while to get my food. No biggy. However, the Cheesesteak did not live up to my expectations. The meat does have some good flavor to it, but the whole sandwich was a bit dry. To me that is one of the best things about a cheesesteak is seeing the juices have soaked into the bread and having it be a bit messy. I dont know if the meat they use doesnt have enough fat or what, but it simply did not satisfy my craving. Also I dont think they use enough cheese. I would definitely go back to the Philadelphian, partially for old times sake, but next time it wont be to satisfy a Cheesesteak craving. So only one more place to try that may knock Moochies from the top of the list. It is time to go visit Kyle at his new digs of Piper Down and see what he has in store.

I also recently went down to The Philidelphian only to be sorely dissappointed. It took me about 45 minutes to get there too. Definately not enough cheese, not messy enough, it didn't even soak through the paper, and the onion rings sucked. Now, I may be from NY, but I've always felt that canned mushrooms were a no-no, and I didn't see any onions to speak of. Also, they put the cheese on AFTER they took it off the grill, it wasn't even melted when I got it. WTF?
Nice folks and all, but really.

I liked the canned mushrooms on their other sandwiches when I used to go there a bunch. But I will agree on the not enough onions thing on the cheesesteak, they were few and far between..... Oh well, bottom line, The Philadelphian has good sandwiches, just dont expect a really good cheesesteak So far Moochies is the only place that has really "hit the spot"

Ummm........ NO...... Wrong answer. The only thing that makes the Cheesesteak blues go away is a real cheesesteak. You simply cant satisfy a craving of one thing with something else, no matter how good it is. If I am craving sushi, no steak is ever going to make that go away. I may really enjoy the steak, but the next day I am still thinking of sushi. It is simply a law of nature, kind of like gravity. Doesnt matter if you agree with it, it is still the law

Just an update for two new Cheesesteak adventures.....

Number one was a complete surprise.... If for some reason you find yourself at Trolley Square in the rundown bar known as Green Street, try their philly. Not "awe inspiring" by any means but better than anything else I have ever eaten there and maybe even worth a trip to Green Street just for a sandwich. Oh who am I kidding, the fact that you can top a philly off with a pitcher of PBR is always worth a trip.

Number two.... I was downtown a few weeks ago and tried East Coast Subs on the corner of State Street and 300 South. Pretty good cheesesteak, but they sure try their hardest to screw it up. Trying to tell them that I only wanted onions, meat and cheese was extremely difficult. They really wanted to put peppers, mushrooms and a bunch of other stuff on my sandwich that did not belong there. Still not as good as Moochies, but if you are in the area it is worth a visit.

Thanks for the "beta". I spotted that place on the way to work a couple weeks ago and was thinking about trying it.

It was definitely worth a stop. BTW on another food note if you are in that area, the Meatloaf at "Moes" is always a good call for lunch. It is on 200 W. and 400 South (accross the street to the West of Port O' Call).

I downed one of these last week and thought the same - good, but not as good as Moochies. Their ordering system was fucked - the cheesesteak comes with grilled onions, then they ask you if you want "everything" and when you say "Well, I don't want any onions other than the ones already on there" you get a blank stare in response.

That's funny, I tried East Coast on Saturday for a cheese steak and thought it was meh. However, I think they have the best turkey sandwhich out. I eat probably three of their turkey's a week.
    Thanks Shane

I am glad someone understands my pain Moochies is really the only place that intends to do them in authentic fashion. Everywhere else you have to explain, you only want meat, cheese and onions and people simply cant fathom that
