Is iTunes reporting back to the mothership?

Recently I've gotten some email offers from the iTunes store for albums by artists I have in iTunes but which I didn't purchase from their store. Are they just lucky guesses or is iTunes reporting what I have in my library back to the mothership? Or am I just paranoid?

Yeah, and you "Own" your property too.

It's all part of that "EULA" you signed electronically. Don't worry - Big Brother loves you.

write to them, or ask to opt-out. there was probably some language in the download that you skipped over.

Yeah that agreement could have said pretty much anything, like most online agreements I barely read a word of it, I'm sure I agreed to it.

I'm pretty sure the shuffle feature is rigged to search for iTunes approved artists as well.

I am also wearing a tinfoil hat right now.

It asks your explicitly when you first start up iTunes 7 whether you want to do this, it's not even hidden in the EULA...

So, by your way of reasoning, I am a dumbass?

    Sounds about right.

They definitely do report back, as they download album art for stuff without asking. This seems to be a feature unique to Itunes 7.

Check if the iTunes "Mini store" feature is turned on. It sends info on songs you play from your library to Apple so they can recommend other songs to you.

On a Mac, go to the "View" menu at the top of the screen, select "Show Mini Store," and then click the proper button to turn it off.

As someone mentioned, there was also a click box back when you first started up iTunes that asked if you wanted Apple to send you email offers. I hope you selected "No." If you did, then you should be getting any emails from Apple, even if the Mini Store was turned on.

Doubledimaond223, under "preferences" you can choose to not have album art automatically downloaded. You can also keep iTunes from checking automatically for updates.

When I installed version 7, I got that dialog box asking if I wanted them to do it. I said no. Apparently they ignored it and did it anyway.
