    F@*&^ing Paypal Question

Hoping some maggots have enough experience with Paypal to help me figure this out...

I have both a bank account and a credit card linked to my Paypal account but there doesn't seem to be any way to specify which one gets used to make a particular payment. I just bought a pair of skis on Ebay and when I paid for them Paypal is automatically trying to transfer the money from my bank account, which doesn't have enough in it. I can't even cancel the transaction and start over after unlinking my bank account.

Is there anything I can do here, or am I screwed and going to get dinged with an NSF fee from my bank plus have to take a cash advance off the credit card (at stupidly high interest rates) to cover the bank withdrawal?

    I fucking hate Paypal...

Paypal is pretty user configurable. I have mine setup to come from a paypal balance first, checking second and credit card third. When it comes up with the second screen there is a link to change the funding source. Click that and it will ask you which source you would like to use. Select the source and hit submit. If it's a credit card it typically asks you if you are sure you want to change the source of payment. Select yes and you should be back to the original second payment screen. Select next/submit or whatever the proceed button is and you should get confirmation. If you screw up you can request the payment be cancelled. It's a bit of a hastle finding it in their menu system but they can do it before it hits your checking acount.

Paypal configures it this way on purpose. There is no way to make it default to my amex card (which offers 500E50x better protection than paypal against getting screwed) instead of a direct account withdrawal. Every time I select it in the intermediate step mentioned above, I get an "are you sure?" message. Fuck yes, assholes. I got burned for 300 bucks when they only got me half of my money back on a recent purchase. Do not trust them!

Okay, well, I probably missed that option about the funding source in one of the screens. The problem now is that I made the payment and there doesn't seem to be any way to cancel it or to change the funding source.

I checked in their help files and it gives a step-by-step method to cancel a payment that hasn't been claimed yet, but it doesn't work. It says that you go to your history page and in the table where it shows the transaction there's an "Action" column and you can click a cancel option in that column, but there is no such option in the Action column when I look up the transaction following the steps they give. It also says the transfer from the bank account is completed, even though it can't be because there isn't anywhere near enough money in that account.

I guess I'll just have to duke this one out with Paypal and then be very sure I've got things in order before paying for anything else. This is only like the third time I've ever used Paypal to pay for an auction and the previous times I had money in the bank account. Oh well, thanks anyway.

It may be complete, but you may be VERY overdrawn if it did go through.

in the UK, they set up a payment called a Direct Debit. When you go to pay for an item, it does give you the option to try another payment method ( credit card etc ) but you have to specify that payment type at time of purchase .

If you have already agreed to pay from your checking account, you're pretty much committed to pay that way. best to just get some cash into that account sharpish... it normally takes 3 days for it to exit your account....

Yeah, that's what I'm going to have to do. The big problem with that is that I will have to take a cash advance off the credit card to deposit into the account. The card company charges a really high interest rate for cash advances, while at the same time they're offering 0% rate on purchases currently. I'll have it paid off in two months, but it sucks to have to pay the high interest rate when I wouldn't have had to if I had seen where the choice to draw funds was.

OR if I could cancel the fricking transaction. It's still unclaimed because the seller is out of town for a few days (he sent me a message letting me know he'd be gone for a few days and would ship the skis when he got back). Paypal's help files say you can cancel an unclaimed payment, but their instructions for doing so don't work.

Apparently they don't answer e-mails either as I sent them one on Thursday and still haven't heard back.

    Oh well, live and learn.

You might try sending a paypal payment to yourself from the credit card, thereby putting it on your bill as a "purchase," then transfer the cash from paypal into your bank account.

Just don't link your bank account to your Paypal account. Why give yourself added exposure to potential fraud abuse? If someone hacks my paypal account the worse damage they could do is charge up purchase on my credit card. There is zero liability with credit card fraud, plus there is purchase protection.

As an ebay seller you need to be verified, as getting money out otherwise is a PITA.

I agree with wizard, there is no way I am letting paypal even get close to my bank account. And as DD said I can't be an ebay seller, therefore I'm not.

I have little faith in paypal, and when the day comes and they get hack, and some day they will, I will pitty all the people with their empty bank accounts.

On my acct, even if 'checking account' is selected as the method of payment, there is a 'backup method of payment' which is always set to credit card. I assumed this meant if my checking balance is too low, it just goes to the credit card - did this happen?

I dunno what's going on, Paypal is weird...

I checked with my bank and credit card co. today and neither shows any withdrawals or new charges yet the Paypal site lists both the "instant transfer" from the bank account and the payment to the seller as "complete." Since they say an "instant transfer" can take 3-4 days to complete and the transaction was initiated last Thursday night and Monday was a bank holiday, maybe the paperwork just hasn't made it through the system yet.

To be on the safe side I deposited enough money in the bank account to cover the purchase. This account is dedicated for Paypal use, I never keep more than $10 in it unless I'm buying something or have sold something and the buyer paid me through Paypal. I figure if someone hacks my paypal account they aren't going to get much 'cuz there's usually no more than $10 in there.

As to the ski/boot question, I finally found an unmounted pair of 05/06 Gotamas and had to have them. Boots will come next, sometime in the next two months. I'm going to go to an actual boot fitter and get it done right this time, maybe some Dale boots. The only boots I've ever had that didn't hurt my feet were some rear-entry Nordicas from the early '90s. I'm working my ass off at two jobs right now, if I can't buy some new skis that I've been lusting after since last year and boots that don't kill my feet, what's the point? One more pair of bindings and the gear budget for the year is gone. Gotta start saving for the Utah trip in Feb. AT boots and skis will have to wait 'til next year.

Come on Einstein. Even I can figure out how to navigate on Paypal.

When you set up your how to pay options, you always have a backup to your bank account. Use that option(credit card) if you don't have the funds in the bank.
