    GPS for the car...

Hey all... been a lurker for sometime and decided to step it up (obviously so I could snipe on gear swap, post pictures of my sister naked, and ask what ski would best suit a "relatively aggresive skiier from Texas)... Anyway, just bought an 06' Outback but couldnt afford too many bells and whistles. Any Mags have rec.'s for aftermarket portable GPS?

^ That one. I have one, it's really worth it if you tend to have the nights where you go from place to place....especially when friends are already wasted and cant give directions worth shit...a maps just too much work! It's really cool, picks up satellites really fast most of the time, has most stuff in there and if it doesn't have the place name in there it'll always be able to get you there if you have the address, works for every single house i've tried so far (which is a lot). Only problem i've had is recently the button on the charger thing broke off, so I cant get it off the gps....but just be careful with the charger and you'll be fine.

There's a cool looking pocket GPS thing on www.woot.com for $300 right now. I don't know if this is what you're looking for, if this thing works well, or if $300 is a good deal. You should definitely buy it, though.

I've used a Garmin quest 2. That bitch Betty doesn't know shit about logging roads in Montana National Forests I can tell you that. It works well but it really likes to keep you to the main route. Using the read a map link will be better for finding routes to avoid going through the middle of a city or back roads to give the most direct route or cut off big chunks. In other words sort of limited usefulness but in the middle of a strange city trying to find obscure places it can be great. The Quest 2 is quite tiny so practical for back country or marine GPS as well with charts or topos available for it.

Then you probably can't afford a GPS. If you're looking for route finding and directions then you need a large screen and extra maps and $700+. Most handhelds don't support auto routing.

www.gpscentral.ca has good prices, a large selection, and good descriptions of the different GPSes.

    Wrong. Not even close.

Do you have a PDA? With Bluetooth? Or a smartphone?

If so you are half way there.

Buy this software, what I use for work as a NA Saleperson: $109, best software I have used yet, including $700 plus devices

Then you need a Bluetooth GPS reciever:
You can throw this in your glove box and it still works with the SIRF III chipset (low power consumption, high sensitivity

Load software, link to GPS, listen to lady tell you where to go (just like married life).

I use this ALL the time. PM me if you have more questions. I work in the industry.

That's not bad for $230 except I don't own a PDA or smartphone. I thought about going that route with my next GPS but I only care about topo maps.

More thoughts on the quest2. I guess previously I drove and the girlfriend worked the GPS but she never wanted to bring it as it drove her nuts. This time I wanted it to get around the city and I programed it while she drove on the way up. It's a bit of a fucking piece of shit. Couldn't imagine the thing being any less intuitive. The user interface is segmented complex and dysfunctional. If the UI is fucked the unit is fucked. Apparently the new generation with touch screen is much better but pricey I'm sure.
