What kind of doctor is this?

So, I have an appointment for a physical today. I just moved and was recommended this doctor by my Mom's co-worker who just moved from Seattle a half a year ago.

This guy seems knowledgeable and personable. ...and then he makes an offer that I most certainly could refuse.

Doc: Oh, I noticed you have furrows
    Me: What??
Doc: [pointing at the area above the bridge of his nose]It looks like you're frowning, but you're not. Right?
    Me: Right???
Doc: Botox can get rid of those.
Me: Giving a WTF?? look, probably making my furrows even more pronounced.
Doc: The option is there if you ever decide you want it.

This is Seattle we're talking about. Not LA, where I could see this scenario happening. What kind of general practice doctor suggests putting a toxin in my face to paralyze it, solely for cosmetic purposes??? Granted, in response to 'Sexually Active?' on the medical profile questionairre, I did put down: "not lately unfortunately", but isn't that outside the area of expertise of a general practitioner?

doesn't the general impy a general knowledge of medicine overall, while his specialty may be something else. not saying he is the best person to suggest botox, but being general, parmy co.s probably hit him off with their latest which he then pimps. also, the sexually active q. just helps in case something else is wrong with you.

so while strange, nothing out of the ordinary. but, maybe find a new gp.

Maybe he thought you looked like the superficial type that would dig stuff like that?

My nose is slightly shifted off to my left from the first time I broke it. When I went in for my pre surgery check up before my first knee surgery the lady doing the checking kept bringing it up.

stupid shallow nurse girl - 'we can fix that while you're out you know'

me, slightly confused - 'thats ok, it doesn't bother me'

her saying more than she should - 'but we can get 2 birds with one stone here! You nose is crooked...'

me, not so happy with the nurse - 'No.'

her, put off because I didn't like her grand idea - 'okaaaaay....'

Then she said my mom 'was just the cutest little thing she ever saw...'

My mom asked what the hell was wrong with her

    Exactly.

Pretty much anyone who has an MD (or DO) and a medical license can take these little courses where they become "certified" to administer botox. Maybe the licence part isn't even necessary. Anyway, it ain't exactly rocket science, and people usually like the results if they're into that kind of thing. Even though the procedure can be fucked up pretty badly in the wrong hands, or on the wrong patient, the results generally aren't permanent, and overall it's pretty safe. Since it's not permanent, it's a steady souce of income for the physician if their patients want to get their wrinkles "re-done" every once and awhile - it can be a fuckin' cash cow, especially for Gen Practitioners who are getting paid pretty much peanuts, or at least much less than their peers in the subpecialties. Nothing wrong with that, if people are willing to pay for the service.

I hear Jim S will be botoxing willing mags at next Summit.

That's nothing. My doc wears eye makeup and isn't a woman.....

I get the "pleasure" of going to him for a physical on Friday.

A Doc looking to make a few extra bucks. I can give you a recommendation for a practice in the Roosevelt neighborhood where you probably won't get that kind of offer.

if it makes you uncomfortable goto another doctor. Since that is such an easy fix one must conclude that this doesn't in fact bother you and since you brought it up here we must conclude...

A warrior's injury. It adds character. Mine sure does (even if sunglasses don't quite fit right any more).

So, maybe wearing a blood stained hockey jersey when you go to the doc could prove to be helpful. They'd just shrug & think to themselves "Lost cause."

Maybe he was really a dentist?

PM me if you'd like suggestions for a good primary care doc.

Sounds like some kind of meterosexual to me.

    Real men have furrows, dammit!

Damn Straight! ...and maybe I actually was frowning, because my doctor was wearing a pink shirt.
