Me and all my fishing buddies used to talk smack about Orvis, a lot.

Until one friend got married to a girl whose dad is an Orvis rep.

Then my dad bought me a new Orvis rod and reel. (6-wt TLS and Mach III reel)

Then my buddies father in law hooked up our other buddy with a 10' 7-wt.

Orvis trout gear kicks ass!! I wouldn't reccommend their fly-lines or tippet, buy their hardware is solid.

Perhaps skiflorida had too many boatdrinks on the way home from the Jimmy Buffet Concert.

    Or is a Loomis guy.

wow. thanks for contribution - any gear reccomendations?

on second thought I'll keep what I have and use the money to pay for fishing trips.

mostly I'm just posting so I can stare at my new avatar.

that's a tough question to answer completely without knowing what the setup would be used for. at this poin temple fork fods and ross reel are making the highest quality products for the lowest consumer prices available. i would recomend some combonation of these. NOT ORVIS JUNK.

So apparently reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. My post was meant to relay a positive experience with a brand I had previosly derided due to (what I perceived as) a high price. I think that is contributing more than just yelling out THAT SHIT IS ALL CRAP!!!!

Obviously you have SO much more experience than I do with fishing gear that I should just shut up and listen to you.

OK asshole, what do you recommend for fishing large western rivers?

Particularly throwing streamers in the Fall (that's what we do around here).

    And CJ, nice avatar

after my buddy's father in law schooled us on the yellowstone on his first day fishing for trout and first day fishing a river from a drift boat, i recommend a $25 spinning combo from bob ward and a box full of huge rapalas.

Ok, so I just found this and assume that today is the day Freak is fishing so back to the Orvis is crap hijack. is a little strong, but in the same pricepoint a nice Ross Reel (the made in USA ones) sitting on a St. Croix Rod (Made in Park Falls WI) both with the superior warranties is the way to go. That said, I fished on Sunday with my Orvis reel that I bought when I got into the sport and did just fine. I did have the Ross on the 3wt for the tight areas though.

    Good Luck,

I just could never understand why someone would pay that much money for a Shimano stick. With the exception of those Roland Martin wannabes.

On the cleaning the fly line issue: I was just researching this yesterday, after a morning on the river wherein the best thing I caught was someone else's fly line (and backing) up a tree on a small island. (How'd it get there, and who gets spooled and then just cuts the backing at the arbor?) This line needs a bit of refurbishment (flotation isn't so hot, and it's dirty). Apparently some folks say dish soap strips out the plasticizer, leaving your line brittle several months later. Some also say Armorall works great to restore the plasticizer; others said Armorall rots vinyl and PVC. In the end, I was left uncertain over what to do... so I'm just going to pass it through a rag to get the dirt off and then rub it with gink.

Several companies make actual line cleaner. here is an example to get you started http://orvis.com/store/product_choic...&feature_id=17 , http://www.gink.com/GG-Products-Stre...neCleaner.html
or you can just hit this google search http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...y+line+cleaner

I read the rumours over the years and once read about an alternative - Aerospace 303. It was damn hard to find where I live, but I've been happy with it for a few years now.

I use 303 on my kayaks. It's like sunscreen for HDPE. Good stuff.

Ive always just used a soft cotton rag to wipe the line clean and then use the scientific anglers line flotant and applicator to shine it up and make it float and glide. The stuffs cheap and lasts forever. The applicator is nice too because it has 4 reversible pads when they get dirty. Its the little blue plastic snap case looking dealy with a line slot running through it.

that extra $10 in handling fee really puts Orvis at a disadvantage...

The $10 handleing fee is pretty standard with a lot of companies. Pretty much pays shipping. Orvis is just more of a target, still looked at like a rich mans catalog. Personally I have no problem with their equipment. I have a reel, one of my reels is spooled with wonderline and it's fine. I have one of their packs, and last year picked up a discontinued pair of Henry's Fork wading boots for $50 anf those have been good as well. That said, when it comes to rods I always choose St. Croix because I've done some work for the company and have been to Park Falls. They have a bunch of little old retired ladies doing the wraps, it's really a town/family effort. It's pretty cool to see if you get the chance, though it's pretty off the beaten track so you have to plan a visit. As for reels, I'm a Ross guy.

    Good Luck,

I like a nice reel as much as the next guy, but seriously, for most trout fishing it just holds the line. The only time Ive ever felt I was really happy I had a nice reel on my fly rod was when Ive been hooked into some larger saltwater species. I guess part of that too is because the trout I catch are generally under 20in. For ref Ive got a 4wt 8'6 sage vps-l with a galvan open back for trout.

Oh you are right on the money. I'd bet 90% of the trout I've caught this year didn't put my drag to use. It's the other 10% that I targeted but you're right they were all over 20". My favorite setup in my 7' St Croix with the Ross Colorado click and pawl. I fish those little gems with the brookies that are just lining up to take a fly with that rod. It's amazing how much fun it is to catch a 10" brookie on a 3wt in a stream that I can jump over.

    Good Luck,
