    Respooling fly reel....NSR obviously

So I am going out to slay some browns tomorrow and realized that the line on the reel I was planning to use is pretty shitty. So I am wondering if a guy can just take off the line of the said reel and just reel it back on the reel I want to use?

Other than probably taking a lot longer than what it would take a fly shop to do.....any other problems? Tips?

i assume theyre the same line weight, taper, and depth.
if so, theres no problem if you know how to tie the correct knots

your post is a little unclear, you are talking about the fly line and not the backing right?
also if you are talking about fly line, and its already spooled onto another reel, why not just swap reels?

just make sure you apply tension to the line while respooling. also if it is a floating line this is a good time to apply floatant, so run it through a paper towel with either commercial floatant or just some dish soap (just as good). make sure that you use either a nail knot or an allbright to connect the backing to the fly line! don't worry about your knots when a big brownie runs! tight lines.

re the backing to flyline connection
i like to do a loop to loop by putting a bimini in the backing and making an eye at the end of the fly line by doubling it back and placing 2 nail knots.

but whatever youre used to and comfortable with woudl probably work too

also its a freaking trout, i doubt youd get into the backing unless you hook into some huge monster on a 3 weight or lower

Yeah like Ski Florida said, make sure you keep even tension on the line when removing. If you're using weight forward line, spool it onto something round like a tube when you take it off, or if you're using double taper you could go directly from reel to reel. Also you'll probably want backing fishing for browns, especially if you're fishing in a faster flowing river. It'll also fill out your reel a little bit.

I would just use the other reel, however that reel is POS Cabelas that I bought my wife when she started. It is SUPER loud when you reel in. Enough that I should almost be wearing earplugs to avoid hearing loss .

So all I want to do is:

Take the line off the Orvis reel and throw it away (its dry rotted)
Take the line off the Cabelas reel
Put that line off the Cabelas onto the Orvis

Should I just be to carefully take the line off, avoiding knots etc. Tie it to the Orvis reel and reel'r in?

edit - I think there is backing on the line I want to use.

bimini's are always the best (doulbe line strenth) however, i find with trout equipment it is unnecesary with 20lb backing and a 30-40lb fly line. what you are looking for is; how smoothly will a knot flow throug the guides of a smaller rod? imop, best way to go is to coat your knot of choice in some kind of soft set epoxy or cement. this will make the knot low friction and flexible going through the small guides of a trout rod.

if you have the cash, this looks like a good setup http://www.orvis.com/store/product_c...subcat_id=6011 you can find better ones in the back of fly fishing mags-some even electric

get an orvis braided loop connector http://www.orvis.com/store/product_c...subcat_id=9864 for quick changes of the line. about 4 bucks, takes a little bit of time to put on , however it is SO worth it in the long run. if you do get those (there are other co's making them, but i have found the orvis ones to be the best) take about 10" of 2-4 lb test and wrap it around the plastic sleeve anchoring the loop. put a dab of head cement between the fly line and loop connector

by the way, orvis is a Women's Clothing and Luggage Co.; not a fishing company. in the future don't buy any of that crap that orvis sells.

Yeah, Rio also makes the basically the same leader loop as orvis. Try tying a nail knot over top of the connection and it'll never come loose.

true, they contract out all of thier gear. however, for the same price, the quality of orvis products is seriously lacking. look at innovative companies like Temple Fork. although; they don't make any luggage.

Yeah, and you can't beat Temple Fork's unconditional life time warranty..."we'll replace it even if sasquatch eats it". I sent my broken rod in and for $20 shipping and handling I had a new one 2 days later.

Ski fla is a bit harsh. they are a VERY good co. but overpriced. they have a HELL of a warranty, almost like an REI warranty. Their line isn't the greatest, however, if you get it off ebay new for cheap, it works. otherwise, Rio is a good one for line. Orvis mid priced reels are built pretty stout and can take a beating, have been using them for years fishing for monster salmon and have only blown through 1 drag on a 7/8 wt reel on a 50 lb king salmon (this was after catching hundreds of salmon on the reel...). And they DO sell mens clothing, actually mainly mens clothes...And even though i am going to get ripped for this, if you are hard on gear, you really have a hard time beating the mid priced orvis stuff-have sent back things that were 5+ years old, they sent me new gear no ?'s asked.

plus they offer the most progressive flex of any rod co. out there for 1/4 of the price. that is the real price of a fly rod! how much does a little bit of fiberglass+cork+aluminium= NOT $750!!!!!!!!

Orvis is JUNK. ask anybody that has been a guide for a while. their only significant addition to the industry has been the lifetime warrenty. it was huge! however orvis gear is crap that rides on an old name recognized by old, rich people that don't know any better. do some research, or at least ask somebody that knows!

i am not totally disagreeing with you, have had issues with some gear like i said. But if you are not guiding, it is ok IF you do your homework and find a good deal on the gear. that is the ONLY way i buy Orvis. I liked redington, but now they are being made in China-thank Sage for that. My rods are either lamiglass or Redington, the lamiglass's are used solely for salmon, haven't found anything yet than can be beat up as bad as those rods can for the money. Redington have become MUCH more expensive in the last few years. ever since Sage bought them out. I do TOTALLY agree with you on the mid to higher end mass produced, non-custom rod prices being SO DAMNED HIGH!!!!

they have products in the high-end saltwater market. however, that is not my point. in any market, for any amount of money, anybody would be better off buying a product not made by orvis. in an industry dominated by stupid white men (much like skiing) the rule of law seems to be----- buy what is known--- know matter what "it" is. quality is less consequent then publicity.

Point taken, i VERY much agree with your broader statement of riding a names coattails Take TNF right now, ever since they started to sell to ALL retailers rather than to the select outdoor oriented stores like REI and local ski/sports shops, their quality has gone downhill in my opinion.

i agree, don't buy crap and if you find a great deal on orvis, do it if you want the best warranty i have found so far. reels no cost for warranty, rods the same as the rest of the ind. (their rod ARE pretty much shit compared to others for the money...)

Fuckit, now I'm too buzzed to mess with it, I'll just have to have the shop do it in the morning.

And I didn't buy it. My wife, while teaching a entomology lab, was given a Thomas & Thomas rod and the Orvis reel by some rep.

Now daddy's got a new set up.

and a nice one at that. good luck fishing, would love to be on the water myself, can't seem to find others in the spokane area who do much fishing (don't have a boat so even more limited). Post some pics of the trip so i can live vicariously, eh?
