The Cars wasn't haunted...I thought most GM products did this in cold weather....MY buddies sunfire used to jam throttle wide, but being a stick you just had to be able to drive....my chevy3/4 van had the same habit but being auto and old enough not to have a rev limiter we developed an iteresting way of dealing with it....can't shut down because the steering would frezz and the brakes would no longer function , and as this only happen goijng up steep hills we would glance the snowbank, a deeper hit each time till the impack caused the throttle to back off.....
Somehow, I knew this was Tom, even before I looked to see who the author was.

I can understand in the first couple of minutes there being fear induced confusion that would cause her to freak and panic, but after 45 minutes, being able to control the car around traffic, her mind had to have been stable enough to think of some solution. Plus, why didn't the friend she called tell her to shut the car off???

I was thinking that too. 45 minutes is a long time to be panicking.

    Wink

I agree with Blurred, she should have just taken a gun and shot herself.

At least she should have steered into a concrete wall or something...

So far Tom is the only person on the board that has pointed out that turning off the ignition would have locked the steering. Although slipping the car out of gear would have been a much smarter move than continuing to drive, I am almost certain that she saved her own life, and possibly the lives of others, by not turning off the ignition.

    scarcasm duly noted

The point I was trying to make was not that she was a hero, but that the suggestion that was made many times to cut the ignition would have almost certainly resulted in an accident.

Yup, in hindsight, it was much safer to rip through the Denver metro area with no control of her car.......Too bad she did'nt hit any gridlock..

can you read? Did I say it would have been safer to drive through Denver? Nope. I only said that killing the ignition would have locked the steering which would have almost certainly caused an accident. That was the ONLY point I was trying to make.

The steering wheel only locks if you turn the key all the way, you still have to go through at least acc,(accessory) setting.

and if she was not a total tool, which she was, she could have just turned the key one click counter clockwise, thus disabling the fuel/ignition systems. Then she still would have had hydraulic pressure for brakes/steering if she left the clutch out..

Umm... no it wouldn't. Your ignition switch has several positions: Start, run, off, lock, and cabin power only on (like the radio). Had she (or anyone else) just turned the ignition switch back ONE NOTCH the engine would have had it's power cut off, but the steering column would not have locked.

HOWEVER: the power steering would have shut down, making the car harder to steer, but by no means impossible.

Goddammit, DuBu, you beat me to it...

    OK, ok....I stand corrected.

Don't you hate it when you think you have a valid point to make, and it gets shot to hell?
