Syria for 10 days in January

I am visiting a female friend who is working for the Austrian embassy in Damascus for 10 days in early January. Other than the Wikipedia entries on Damascus, Aleppo and Syria itself, I know relatively little about the country.

WWMD (other than request naked pictures of my hot friend)?

To blend in and be accepted I'd suggest you wear these shirts, esp when you enter a mosque.

Don't forget the big Uncle Sam Stars and Stripes hat--I'd give you ten minutes before someone decided to serve Allah and take you out.

Actually, I believe there is a very small remaining Jewish Quarter in Damascus, pretty sure they keep their heads down and leave the Hebrew t-shirts at home. We'll expect a good TR.

Leave a picture of the Pope at home.

Seriously here are a few websites with phone numbers that you should keep with you at all times while visiting there. And you will be able to keep up with travel warnings to Syria as well. http://syria.usembassy.gov/

Check out the lonely planet travel guide for the Middle East, there are loads of useful information there.. and don't get too paranoid, people in this part of the world are (mostly) very friendly and open to meeting foreigners who made the efford to come visit their country..
