Cool Picture Report: Loveland Pass - 9+" Fresh - 9.21.06

    Loveland Pass

    SheRa, Summit, the Gosey

SheRa called me at some ungodly hour this morning. It was dark when we started. We were at the top of the pass well before 7AM.

    SheRa converses with CDOT

It was cold, snowing, and blowing.

It had snowed quite a bit:

We measured 9" pretty consistently except where the wind had stripped it. Where the wind had dropped the snow, it was considerably deeper:

    Summit (by Shera)

    Shera

    Summit (by Shera)

As we got down to the road, it returned to about 7-8" in the lower trees... we skied slowly and could tell where the other was by thhe scraping noises. It is a lot of snow... but on a base of nil it is sketch skiing:

    Early season inevitability

After two runs, Shera had to go to school.

Shera has claim to the first run down Loveland Pass this season.

After Shera left, Max Gosey showed up. After hitting him with a few doses of elephant tranquilizer to ensure he didn't get too agro in the early conditions, we were off.

Yes it was all silly... I wore more armor thhan I've ever worn skiing... but it was fun and it was skiing!

I was hoping he had a part time gig installing carpet but after giving it some thought think your answer more likely.

Meh, I knew I'd get some grief for the kneepads, but I'll actually take the time to try to justify: I had a very hard time contacting Summit on my way up I-70 after he had told me to come up, so I wasn't even sure I was going to ski. Driving with kneepads on isn't really fun, but it would take too long to remove my ski pants, put the knee pads on, and then put the pants back on after shuttling to the top of the pass. So I just strapped the fuckers on outside so I didn't bash up an already bruised knee on a rock.

Anyway, nice pics Summit. Thanks for taking them, dood. I especially like the gaper steeze in this one.

Sorry I didn't get any of you, but I thought for whatever reason we had more vert to ski and thus I had some more opportunities to snap some shots of you. Either way, it was freakin' fun, and thanks for going out. I'll toast a pibber later on to an injury-free first day.

P.S. 10 pts to CantDog (that shit is funny ).

Given the conditions there I think the knee pads were a great call. If I go this weekend I'm bringing my hockey gear.

There are designated parking spots in the large pull out areas. All other areas, ie side of the road, are no parking/stopping.
